Two middle name stories:
My Williamsburg IA born great-grandfather and his sister both had middle
initials of "M": John M. Williams and Sarah M. Williams. These middle
initials may not have stood for anything. I am told this was a common
practice, especially among those with such common names as you might find
with the Welsh.
John M. Williams had four children, the last of which was the only one with
a middle name: Willis, Hazel, Ruth, and James R. Williams. James died at 3
months of age. Ruth writes about him has her brother "Richard". John M.'s
father (my g-g-grandfather) is named Richard, as is Willis's son (my
father).
Steve
Stephen David Williams (David is my uncle's name ;-)
