I know several people in my family back in 1900-1950's that didn't have middle names at birth but as an adult chose one or simply used an Initial because it "looked nice". I always back my info with documents and make a note or why or where they got the New name or Intial...lol.

My Williamsburg IA born great-grandfather and his sister both had
middle
initials of "M": John M. Williams and Sarah M. Williams. These middle
initials may not have stood for anything. I am told this was a common
practice, especially among those with such common names as you might
find
with the Welsh.
