You want to know whats bad,lol...when your Irish family sticks to the
naming pattern no matter what! I have a branch to my (O)CONNELL family
where both the father and mothers fathers were named John.
The father was also John as was the mothers oldest surviving
brother.Yup...all 4 sons were called by their middle names, but their
given names were ALL JOHN!!!!
I had an uncle whos given name was James, but took on the name John
after a brother who died young. When my uncle died in 2000,
he was buried with the name John on his tombstone...this will makes
future research hard, since we also have the burial place of the
younger brother who WAS John.My uncles wife, who died in 1995 was named
Sadie.
She somehow went by the name Rita, but my uncle called her Tillie.
She is buried next to uncle John as Rita.So here we have James and
Sadie buried as John and Rita.
In the 1880 census,my grand-father Charles Francis MOODY is listed as
Michael C.,now whats up with this?? He was b.1878 in Canada,so it had
to be a parent who gave the info...
So,my point here,I think, is a name does not have to stand necessarily
for a shortened nickname of the original,it could come from
anywhere. How my aunt got to be Rita is a mystery. She was b.Sadie DUNN
in NY and was buried as Rita MOODY....This should pose some
interesting research for future genealogists,lol...All I can do is
document it,and hopefully, somehow, someway, they will find my notes!
