Yes, it does strike a chord because I read a book many years ago that I
thought was fascinating called "Faint the Distant Trumpet Sounds" -- it was
written about 20 years ago or more (they may have re-used the name in a
newer book so be careful), and it was written by a military historian. It
was mainly about CAPTAIN RENO (or Major Reno? I forgot), one of the three
leaders under Gen. Custer's command that was with him that fateful day.
This book was all about how General Custer's wife in grief, and in her
prolific writings of her husband's adventures, and because of her
connections in Washington, D.C., tried to put the blame on Capt. Reno for
the tragedy of the massacre, which was all the more tragic because he
purportedly did all the right things at the right time and therefore saved
his own troops from being slaughtered. It was the General's ego that got in
the way of a successful outcome. It book, as I said, was quite fascinating
to me. I am sure you can find it in a library or through Amazon.com or
Alibris.com or one of those other book sale sites. Maybe a general search
on your search engine will bring it up. I'm always surprised at what pops
up with a general search.
Just call your library and see what they have -- or type in Major Reno or
Capt. Reno in the search engine. Actually, I'm betting that there are more
great books on Custer, his officers and men and the Little Big Horn. Good
hunting! Sandy in Calif.
