WILLIAM O. SCHMIDT is a native of Davenport, where he was born June 9, 1856.
He was educated in the public schools of his native city and at the State
University, entering upon the practice of law in Davenport. He has always been a
Democrat and since 1896 has affiliated with the sound money wing of that
party. Mr. Schmidt was a member of the House of Representatives in the Nineteenth
and Twentieth General Assemblies, and a member of the Senate of the
Twenty-first, Twenty-second, Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth General Assemblies, having
served continuously for twelve years. He was the author of a bill for the
regulation of the liquor traffic which received the endorsement of the Democratic
party in State convention, and similar to the plan upon which Horace Boies
was twice elected Governor of the State.
