I'm in a puzzlement, and hope someone can shed some light with any leads
here...
My gggrandmother was born Martha Elizabeth Richards January 14, 1950.
Her mother was Catherine Mauk, d/o George Mauk and Elizabeth Shipley. I
have this Mauk family on the Hawkins Co TN 1840 & Barren Co KY 1850,
1860, 1870, 1880. By 1900 Catherine is living with her by then widowed
dau Martha (w/o John Tyler Deweese).
Catherine is listed with her parent's family in 1850 and thereafter with
parents or siblings. Martha is not listed on the 1850, although she
would have been 6 mo old at the time. Martha and her little sister Mary
born 1852 is listed in 1860 and 1870 with Catherine Mauk. Both
daughters, Mary and Martha, bear the surname Richards. By 1880 Mary has
died and Martha has married, Catherine lives in her brother's household.
The quandary:
By 1870 Catherine lists her surname as Richards, but not in prior years.
I have found an 1848 marriage record in Hawkins Co TN for Catherine Mauk
and "Thomas" Richards. Martha's 1940 Barren Co KY death certificate
lists her father as "Jim" Richards. The children and grandchildren of
Martha have all been told her father is "Jim" Richards. Martha is tended
at the time of her death in 1940 by a Dr. Richards-first name illegible.
Family story has it that he is a relation of her father, but no one
knows the relationship. Who is/was "Jim" Richards? Is/was he the same as
"Thomas" Richards? How is/was he related to "Dr. Richards" tending
Martha Richards Deweese in 1940? What ever happened to Jim or Thomas or
James Thomas or Thomas James Richards? Help me out here, please! Any and
all suggestions VERY WELCOME!
Thanks,
Lois
