Pam:

Horse and mule pulling contests are very popular. Surely, those events
were
held back in the "good ol' days." A sled is used in pulling contests,
wherein
the friction/drag increases as distance pulled increases. The winner is
the
team of horses/mules, tractor or pick-up truck which pulls the weighted
sled
the greatest distance in a nearly-straight line. In the olden days, they
likely
didn't have weighted sleds, but just pulled a heavy object such as a
chunk
of limestone. I don't know for sure since I wasn't there. You probably
can tell
from the photo what they are pulling.

Draft horse & mule shows also are popular events at state fairs. I
watched the
judging of miniature mules at the 2000 Indiana State Fair.

On a sidenote, on 2-3 occasions I've seen a farmer in Central
Pennsylvania
doing his farming with seven [7] red, sorrel mules. They were hitched
all 7
abreast vs. 3 in front and 4 behind, or some other combination. Red,
sorrel
is light red, with a white blaze in their face.
