I know that coal
was shipped to England from Cloversport according to some information I
found on the internet. This also surprised me as I thought England had a
lot of coal. It also stated that the mines were owned by Englishmen.
The coal was a very soft coal and came from the area of Cannelton Indiana and
was shipped out of Cloverport. I heard a rumor about 1940 that "Coal Oil "
was first made in Cannelton or from "Cannel Coal" by heating the coal and
sweating an oil from this. It was widely touted for all sorts of uses, including
medical and is responsible for the term "Coal Oil" or Oil from Coal as opposed to
Kerosene being oil from Crude oil. I would guess nearly identical composition
and uses.
