I can shed some light on your musings. Thanks for showing such interest and taking time to help with this research. Three of Gabe's sons died in Louisville: John D., Gabe F. and Guy S, as well as his widow Ada Jones Meador McCans. Gabe F. never appeared on a census with Gabe and Ada since he was born between 1880-1900 censuses. Family records list him. Apparently he went to Louisville first and probably never married. More research needs to be done on him.

Ada Meador married Alex D. McCans in Louisville about 1917, years after she was widowed. I suppose it's possible either Ada and Gabe were in Louisville between 1900 after census date and 1905. However, a Meade Co deed dated 1905 was delivered to Ada, widow of G.A, in Elizabethtown. By 1905 John D. had married a Lousivlle girl, Harrye Milward, and Guy had married a Suzelle or Suselle whose last name I don't know. I have neither marriage license so don't know if they married in Meade, Breckinridge or Jefferson Co, KY.

I've never been able to find Gabe's son, Alexander M,. except on a family tree in Kansas. That Alex's wife's name was Helen Morrow; the first name my father-in-law gave for Alex's wife also was Helen. That Alex also was born in KY. My father-in-law said Alex became a lawyer and went west. I don't know if the one I located is the right one or if Alex had progeny. Alex may have been known by his middle name, which I don't know.

I found some newspaper excerpts from an old Breckinridge Co paper that contained pictures and articles about Mary and McHenry. They mentioned G.A. Meador, a hotel and race track. Big Spring Methodist Church minutes also mention Alexander or Alex Meador, and until now I've always believed he was one of Gabe's sons, since Gabe was supposed to have had a son named Alex. In the same church records Ada, Sally and Nettie Meador, contemporaries of young Gabe, were cited. It's possible, though, the Alex in the church records was really Gabe using his second name.

My in-laws told me Sarah (Sally) McCans died and McHenry married Mary Richardson who was "the widow McCans." My husband's bloodline is from Sarah McCans, mother of Gabe. McHenry's will shows he left all his estate to the second family--Mary and daughters Sally, Ida, and Nettie. I think he had given Gabe some land prior to the will.

I imagine the McCans living with McHenry in 1870 were Mary's sons by her first husband, step-sons or perhaps nephews. I don't know how Mary's first husband and McHenry's first wife were related but imagine they were. Also Nancy McCans in the 1860 census is more likely McHenry's mother-in-law, possibly the mother of his first wife or Mary's first husband's mom, or one of their aunts by marriage. Mary's mother should have had the last name of Richardson, Mary's maiden name, unless she remarried. I wonder if there is a Richardson and McCans marriage or a Nancy Hall and McCans marriage.

John C.'s second wife was Nancy Hall. Yes, John C. was McHenry's father. He went to CA and returned to KY, where he died. I don't know if he was still with Nancy Hall when he was in CA, if she was alive, or if they had split.

I don't recall what happened to Ada Ellen but will try to find out.
