Hi Sally...

I was at the cemetery last June with my cousin who was in from Wisconsin.
It was my second visit, her first. We weren't able to stay long for two
reasons. One, remains of Tropical Storm Aileen/Arlene (whatever the name was) was
traversing through the area giving us sporadic downpours... and two, we had
teenage visitors while we were there. The rain just damped our spirits, in
addition to seeing the previous damage to the cemetery. When the three
teenagers showed up, we generally questioned them as we were leaving and the lack
of answers confirmed that they weren't there to visit family. As we pulled
out, and they went to the back of the cemetery, we got car information (plates
and IDing info). Unfortunately, we were in a dead zone and couldn't alert
the police fast enough for anything to be done.

As far as the condition, it's better than some... but worse than others.
You could go through to the back, but on the left the grass was knee high (thin
and sparse). I want to say back in 2003 or 2004 there was a group of
individuals that went in and restored many of the broken and destroyed stones, but
when my cousins and I visited on Good Friday, 2004 (which is when the
pictures on the GenWeb site were taken) more damage had been done and at least one
marker was missing. My 3rd g-grandparents grave, Sandy and LeeAnn Lawson
Kasey, had their marker taken down and broken into 7 or 8 pieces... was restored,
and someone was mad at it being back up and tried taking it down again but
was unsuccessful. Of my 4th g-grandparents, Francis Tinsley Boatright Kasey's
marker was broken from the base; Singleton Lyle Kasey's marker was broken
from the base and something was taken to it to shatter it into many pieces on
the ground. My 3rd g-grandfather's brother, Benjamin Blissett, had a marker
as of the 1970's transcription of the cemetery... but it was missing when we
were there in 2004. Several of the footstones and one of the smaller markers
had been broken away and piled up on one of the old gateposts that had been
taken out of the ground. The gatepost was laying on the ground around a
"bonfire" area so that whomever was there could "stay warm" and sit down without
getting their clothes dirty.

I don't how it is going with regard to law enforcement and the cemetery,
maybe someone on the list can bring you up to date on that aspect. Hopefully
this has helped. I do have several "general shot" pictures of the cemetery if
you'd like to see them, just let me know privately in email and I'll be more
than happy to show you. The condition of the cemetery then, is about what it
was last June.
