For years I have known that there is a Jolly-McClellan-Sterett connection
even though I have not yet been able to prove it to my particular ancestor,
John
Sterett [husband of Sally DeHaven, father of WIlliam G., Green B., and Baird
among others]. In addition, you will find Hoggs, Smiths, Grahams, and Boyds
(my particular line). They travel together, live near one another, and marry
one another. I know the connection will probably prove the parentage of my
John
Sterett much better than the assumption of Alexander as claimed in T. Woods
Sterett's book. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
Thank you,
Candy [Sterett] Johnston

Candy, I had never really looked at these associations before.
On CD " Early Kentucky Records" I found.
Scott Co. Will Book A
Sterett, James, settlement. Nov. 1794. John Sterett, Admr.
Could this have been our John? He would only have been 15.Do you think James
was his father or brother?
David, I believe that this James and John Sterett are brothers. I believe
that this John is the father of our John Sterett as there is some records that
show our John was called "young John Sterett."

Of course, I am not certain but it appears that Sarah Wilson Sterett, who
married Robert Hogg, is daughter to a James and Margaret Sterett which could make
her a cousin. Could this Margaret be the Peggy Sterett alias Peggy McCleland
below? I had understood that the John below was married to Peggy McClelland.

Supposedly, this Sarah was born in Augusta County, Virginia. Of course, she
could have been born in Scott County, Kentucky, and the birth recorded at
Augusta County, Virginia, at the time.

Cynthia E. Crawford was the last wife and widow of William G. Boyd. She
collected his pension from the War of 1812. I know little about William G.'s
marriage to Nancy Shannon. However, I do know that he did, in fact, marry a
Newland before his marriage to Jane Liggett, the widow of Robert Newland. James
Newland was his stepson. William G. and Jane had several children together:
Columbia Boyd (who married William H. Diggs), Robert Liggett Boyd, and Celeste
Boyd (who married Dr. Green B. Sterett, son of John and brother of Baird). It
is from Green and Celeste that I descend. Interestingly, as your line has
proliferated the John Hardin Sterett name. Our line has given us several clues (I
call it "name-mapping") to work with ---- my great-grandfather was William
Liggett Sterett and my grandfather was James Boyd Sterett. Hence, I know that
William and James were additional family names. Even William's other children
were named for relatives: Jennye McClure Sterett, Columbia Diggs Sterett,
Sarah Buchanan Sterett, Celeste Boyd Sterett, Charles Green Sterett, and my
James.

As best as I can tell, Jackson Moorman's papers were based on the widely
accepted T. Woods Sterett book. I find it interesting that, in a family who
passes names down from generation to generation, there is NO Alexander.
Interestingly, all of John Sterett's sons were named: William Green Sterett, Green B.
Sterett, and Baird Sterett. Grandsons even include one William G.B. (William
Green Baird) Sterett. It is easier to make the Smith/Sterett connection as the
first entry in the Sterett family Bible was Martha who married a Smith. I
believe she is John's older sister.
I sure could use some help,
Candy [Sterett] Johnston
