Message Board Post:
I saw your posting on the Breckinridge County List about V.B. Burton. I thought I might try and help you find him. I checked my book, Breckinridge County, Ky Cemeteries, Volume 1, and I believe I found the burials for him and his parents:
TAUL Cemetery, located on the right side of Highway 105, northwest of the New Clover Creek Church (which is in the Hites Run Community of Breckinridge County):
BURTON, V. Basterfield 02-26-1855 -- 02-14-1900
BURTON, George Bassett 01-08-1821 -- 08-08-1861
SMITH, William L. 06-18-1835 -- 03-31-1911
SMITH, Mary J. born 01-16-1835 death date empty
In Volume 1 of Breckinridge County, Ky Records, by Michael and Bettie Cook, published in 1977, on page 255, I found this marriage:
January 16, 1854
George B. Burton, of Ohio County, Ky to Mary Jane Pate
I found them in the 1860 census of Breckinridge County, Ky
page 106, District 2, P.O. Hardinsburg, Ky #794-#794
Enumerated on 01 Sept 1860 by John McClarty
BURTON, Geo. B. 39-m farmer b.Ky $1800-$350
Mary J. 25-f b.Ky
Basterfield 05-m b.Ky
Amelia G. 02-f b.Ky
SMITH, Sarah E. 10-f school b.Ky
(I didn't find daughter Amelia in any other census)
I checked Breckinridge County, Ky Records, Volume 2, by Michael and Bettie Cook, published in 1984, and found Mary's second marriage (husband George Bassett Burton died in 1861):
Bonddate Dec 17, 1863 Bondsman Vicisinus Pate
Groom: William L. Smith, age 28, farmer, 1st marriage
A resident of Breckinridge County, Ky
Born in Grayson County, Ky
His father was born in Hardin County, Ky
His mother was born in Hart County, Ky
Bride: Mrs. Mary J. Burton, age 28, 2nd marriage
A resident of Breckinridge County, Ky
Mary and both her parents were born in Breckinridge County, Ky.
To be married on December 17, 1863 at the residence of Susan R. Pate.
I found this family in 1870 census of Breckinridge County, Ky, page 8, Hardinsburg Precinct, P.O. Cloverport
Enumerated on 12 July 1870 by A.L. Simons, #59-#57
SMITH, William 36-m farmer b.Ky $1500-$500
Mary J. 36-f keeps house b.Ky
Berton 15-m school b.Ky
Margarett 06-f b.Ky
Charles W. 03-m b.Ky
(Berton Smith is actually V.B. Burton)
In 1880 Breckinridge County, Ky census
page 11, Enumerators District # 30, Liberty Hall
Enumerated on 18 June 1880 by Z.D. Wilson, #74-#78
SMITH, William L. 44-m mrd farmer Ky Ky Ky
Mary J. 45-f wife mrd housekeeper Ky Ky Ky
Margarette A. 15-f dau single at home Ky Ky Ky
Charles W. 12-m son at home Ky Ky Ky
Robert M. 10-m son at home Ky Ky Ky
I believe I found V.B. Burton in the 1880 Butler County, Ky census, page 17, Enumerators District # 109, Burdens Community, enumerated on 14 June 1880 by Columbus Smith
I forgot to get the family and dwelling number:
BARTON, Volney B. 25-m single works on farm Ky VA Ky
Living on the farm of Newton Romans and family.
I found William L. Smith and wife, Mary J. Pate Burton Smith on the 1900 and 1910 censuses of Breckinridge County, Ky. Mary said she had had 8 children with 3 living in 1900 and 1910. The death date is empty on Mary's tombstone, but we know she was still living on 20 April 1910 when the census was enumerated. I couldn't find Mary on the Ky Deaths Index, but I did find William L. Smith, who died in 1911. In 1900 you will find them under William L. Smith. In 1910 you will find them under Wm L. Smith.
I didn't find a marriage for Volney Basterfield Burton in Breckinridge County before 1895. (I don't have access to marriages after 1895 in Breckinridge County). If he married, then it was possibly in Butler County when he was living there. I wonder if he ever married? I didn't find a wife for him at the Taul Cemetery under the Burton surname.
This is all I found today. I hope it helps your research. I believe he lived around Rockvale and Vanzant. There are other Burtons buried at the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery near Rockvale in Breckinridge County, but to be honest, I didn't look for a connection.
A friend in genealogy, Peggy L. Russell
