Perhaps the word "cascade" carried an unusual meaning. The Oxford English Dictionary has several obscure definitions for the word beyond the normal ones of a waterfall or a succession of electrical stages in a process. The unusual ones were: "a pyrotechnical device imitating a waterfall; and also, a wavy arrangement of hanging lace.
