Hi John....

I got the call last night and while the two that I was most concerned about were fine.... the markers for the babies/infants/young children were among those broken. I'm sending what pictures I have so they will have a "map" of "how" and "where" when they fix the markers. Unfortunately they didn't stop with just breaking the markers from the base.... the took those whole markers and broke them against other whole or partial markers. In doing so, they've created quite a mess.

I will say this about Cedar Hill, Stephensport cemetery caretakers. They have went above and beyond when it comes to all of this. They've reassured me that they will fix the markers, even the ones that were broken due to time/nature prior to the vandalism. The caretaker I talked with did inform me of one marker that was broken that I didn't get a picture of, and it's only because I didn't know it was there until months after my visit.

On the juveniles who did this, I'm with the understanding that one lives very close to the cemetery. In some ways I would like to face them and ask just why they did it. Let them see my, and others affected, faces at the destruction they did. In some cases there are markers that cannot be repaired and due to the age of the marker, they cannot be replaced. I'd like those "children" to face those they hurt now. No matter how wrong it was, or how angry I and others may be, hopefully those two children will find some kind of forgiveness from those families affected. If so, may be they'll realize they can rise above this and they'll never do it again. Otherwise... well, I don't want to think of the otherwise.

Dana

Dana, thanks for making this report. Vandalism to cemeteries is such
a cruel crime. You make some very important points about the value
of taking photos of tombstones - restoration of damaged stones (by
whatever reason) and a method to establish evidence against
vandals. Hopefully your family's stones were not among those that
were damaged. I feel a lot of sorrow for those families that lost
markers due to these very young criminals. They owe an eternal
apology to the deceased that they desecrated their stones. I
envision that when these kids die that there will be a "welcoming"
committee waiting for them on their way to Hades.
