Actual birth records as we know them were not generally kept until very late 1800's by some counties, and early 1900's as mandated by the states. If you are looking for birth records for mid to late 1800's, you'll need to look for alternative sources. Census records are one such source, and other than the 1900 census, will only give you the year of birth. That information is only as reliable as the person giving it to the census taker. Other alternate sources include death records, obituaries, cemetery and tombstone records, family bibles, and the like. If you can locate church records, those are another possibility.
