Greetings!
A few additional thoughts regarding your posting.
According to her death certificate and the death certificate of Robert Taylor Canary, the wife of Henry C. Canary, Frances Ann (or Anna) Canary, was not a HANKS but a DOWELL. Specifically, her death certificate identifies her parents as Clayborn Dowell and Caroline Rollins. The death certificate states these folks were both born in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. I did not chase this information when your mother and I were looking into your CANARY ancestry a few years back. I do, however, have notes indicating Clayborn is said to be a son of Micajah Dowell (who is likely, in turn, a son of George Dowell, to whom you're directly but distantly related through your BASHAM roots) and Frances Meador, who migrated from Virginia (likely Bedford County) to Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Please note I've also seen "Clayborn" spelled Claybourne and Claibourne and similar formatives, and that I've seen ROLLINS represented as RAWLINGS and similar variations in Breckinridge County records. I've not researched the Micajah Dowell line and do not have much info on the Meadors, so you will want to see what you can find regarding these Dowell, Rollins and Meador folks.
In regard to the discrepancies as to Frances' HANKS versus DOWELL roots, I have a notation in my database that another researcher claims Clayborn Dowell died about 5 July 1835 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Please note I have not sought to confirm this information. Those of you related to Frances might, however, want to investigate if perhaps (i) this information is accurate, (ii) Clayborn's wife Caroline survived him and later married a HANKS, and/or (iii) a HANKS was named guardian of Frances following the death of her father. The 1850 U.S. Census for Breckinridge County, Kentucky does enumerate the following family:
1850 U.S. Census, Breckinridge County, Kentucky, District No. One, 20 Sep 1850
HANKS, John 37 Farmer 400 born KY
Caroline 36 KY
Fanny 17 KY
Robert 11 KY
James 7 KY
While much research remains to be undertaken, I suspect this Fanny is your gal, Caroline Hanks is the widow of Clayborn Dowell, and Robert Hanks (enumerated with Frances in the 1910 U.S. Census and noted to be her brother) is either a full or half brother of Frances.
Finally, have you all found any documentary proof as of yet of Laura Hicks/Hix's Indian ancestry? If not, you may want to try to locate a direct male HICKS/HIX descendant of Laura's parents and see if he would be willing to help with your quest via DNA testing.
Good luck!
Also, C.A., please say hello to your mother and grandmother for me and feel free to call me or to email me off the list at .

Tanya Curtis

Samuel Canary was a brother of Robert Taylor Canary.
