What I have, from a letter (1947) to my mother from a cousin, Lillian, whose father, Washington Lafayette Martin, came to Texas from Arkansas after the War: Sarah Newman, daughter of Edmund Newman and Mary Wyatt, and wife of James martin was born 17 August 1797 in Shenandoah Valley, VA. This would not correspond with information found in the biography of Thomas Newman who has Edmund Newman in Kentucky by 1795. However Newman Hall, in his letter to me, suggests that Sally was born about 1781 or 1783, though he did not give justification for this date. Sally is the fourth child mentioned in her father's will. If the children are listed in the will in birth order, with parents married 3 April 1783, his suggested dates may be close. (She died 9 March 1852.) Although we have tombstone records of Edmund St. John Newman, her brother, the dates are not readable; his wife was born 8 November 1803 and died 20 April 1875. He was born __27, 17__ and died 9 October 1859. In censu!
s, Sally gives her birthpalce as KY. She married James Martin, 1 November 1816, and they ultimately moved to Arkansas - among the earliest settlers of that territory, 1828. She is mentioned in her father's will as the wife of James Martin. She is the mother of Edmund St. John Martin (my great grandfather) and Washington Lafayette Martin. She is listed with her son W. N. W. Martin as the executrix of her husband's estate, and these records reveal that she died before April, 1857. Lillian gives her death date as 9 March 1852. Edmund St. John Martin married Sarah Howard in Hancock Co. KY. After his death she married a Mr. Seaton. She had three sons, all of whom had Howard for a middle name, James, Thomas, and Edmund: my grandfather was Thomas Howard Martin.
Lillian refers to her grandfather as Col. James Martin. Littleton Martin (Sr.) is on the tax rolls of Bullitt Co., KY in 1800-1803. In 1804 the widow Martin appears. In 1805, Dicy Martin, and 1806, Leodicia. In 1805 Littleton, Jr. also appears. Elisha Johnson married (daughter) Leodocia Martin in 1806-9. In 1810 Leodice and Littleton Martin are found in the census of Brecknridge. Leodicia last paid taxes in 1820. I have a little more in a family history I published in 1996.
