RESPONSE:
From the Clay Co. Marriage Index:
LEWIS, Joseph to HENSLEY, Ella on 24 Dec 1893, File 24
1900 Clay Co. Fed. Census
Dwelling 372-391
LEWIS, Joseph, husband, b. 7-1861, 39, mar. 7 years, b. KY; parents b. KY -
farmer
. . Ella, wife, b. 8-1878, 21, mar. 7 yrs, 3 born; 3 living, b. KY (I am
inclined to think the age is wrong; perhaps 31?? what do you think. Will
keep checking. Otherwise, she is too young to have Belle.
. . David, son, b. 10-1885, 14, at school ( from another marriage)
. . John, son, b. 6-1889, 10, at school (from another marriage)
. . Olive, dau, 9, b. 7-1890, KY (from another marriage)
. . Ford, son, b. 12-1894, 5, Ky
. . Squire son, b. 3-1897, 3, KY
. . Lucy a., dau, b. 2-1899, 1, KY
TIGG, Jane, dau, b. 8-1879, 20, widow, 2 born; 2 living, b. KY - day
laborer
. . Charles, grandson, b. 5-1897, 3, KY
. . Lewis, grandson, b. 4-1899, 1, KY
Emma, Since Belle is not listed there, I still think this is her listed as
a servant in this house:
Dwelling 259-273
SHARPE, levi, b. 10-1843, 56, mar. 9 yrs, b. TN; parents b. TN
. . Lizzie, wife, b. 2-1871, 29, mar. 9 yrs, l born; l living, b. KY
. . Franklin, son, b. 4-1892, 8, KY
HENSLEY, Belle, servant, b. 3-1881, 19, single, b. KY; parents b. KY* * * *
I have a feeling this is the correct Ella HENSLEY because she has named her
son, Squire and this Ella has a father, Squire:
1880 Clay Co.( "annotated" and sold by James WELCH)
Dwelling 243-244
HENSLEY, Squire, 50, b. NC; parents b. NC
. . Alabama, 28, wife, b. KY
. . Thomas, 21, son, KY
. . Annie, 17, dau, KY
. . Sarah, 15, dau, Ky
. . Martha Jane, 12, dau, KY
. . Elizabeth, 9, dau, KY
. . Orlen A., 5, dau, KY
. . Ella G., 4, dau, KY * * *
. . Levi, 2, son, KY
. . Lucy M., 2, dau, KY
. . Sofa, 5 mo's as of Feb.
DAVISON, Pierce, 11, KY
NOTE: mar. lst Elizabeth MARCUM 9-17-1855 in Clay); mar. 2nd Alabama
GILBERT on 4-11-1871 in Clay
Emma, Something is WRONG here. If this is Belle, age 19 in 1900 which
pretty well matches the later census records for her, then she cannot be
the dau. of the Ella who is only bet. 21-24 years old as of 1900.
Unfortunately, I do not see any other Ella HENSLEY's in Clay Co. as of
1880.
1920 Clay Co.
Dwelling 131-131
LEWIS, Joseph, husband, 60, b. NC
. . Ella, wife, 43, KY
. . Lucy, dau, 20, KY
. . Elizabeth, dau, 18, KY
NOTE: For anyone interested in this posting, this information is
significant to Emma and to me and to some others. Now I know who the
mother of Belle HENSLEY was. Belle HENSLEY mar. William Sherman
MERIDA-MEREDITH (son of Mahala TAYLOR and Bradley MEREDITH). Sherman was
shot in Clay Co. and killed, along with his wife, Belle HENSLEY, who was
pregnant at the time. He was shot and killed by General MAY of Clay Co.
who later died for this act. They also had a young son, John Henry abt.
6 or so at time time. John Henry was taken in by an older half-sister of
John H's from one of William Sherman's earlier marriages. They lived at
Bailey Switch in Knox Co. When he was abt. 16 years old, John Henry
MEREDITH-MERIDA left home and joined the U. S. Navy and ended up in
Connecticut. John Henry who later changed his name to MERADY was the
father of Emma who is writing this query.
