Subject: [KYCLAY] PART, V,Clay Co. KY Connections ~~John C. Robbins/Robins IS NOT Jonathan C.Robbins/Robins
Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2007 12:26:56 -0700 (PDT)
Please forgive me for being a week late. First off I have to correct four [4] items from Part IV.
1. The spelling of Yancey county, North Carolina originally when formed in 1833 was spelled
as Yancy and was later changed to Yancey.
2. I left off a son of Thomas L. Runion, Senior and Jane Robbins as enumerated in 1860
census of Notta District, England Paint, Cherokee Co. NC. A 12 year old Linsley or
Linley was listed as born in Cherokee Co. NC.
3. I indicated that Elias/Elisha Robbins/Robins was a grandson of Mary Ann [Masagee]
Robbins/Robins. He in fact was a GREAT grandson of Lemuel & Kesiah/Keziah Robbins/
Robins and is the only son of THE REAL Jonathan C. Robbins/Robins.
4. The 4th item to be corrected would be the pages that I gave out concerning Yancey/Yancy
county, NC. First off, at the time the census pages that gave the county name, was
originally on page after # 191, and had a written number 35 in right hand corner. The
very next page which started the census households was page # 256. The final page of
households was page # 287. Four pages after this page you will see that on
16 September 1840, James A. Wilson, Assistant Marshall, for the county of Yancy, North
Carolina.
In previous part, PART IV, Chapter 2, we left off with Mary Ann [Masagee] Robbins/Robins in the 1850 census, living in Clay County, KY, and the dwelling & household # 705 also contained her daughter and son-in-law, Addison BALL and Abigail Adaline Robbins/Robins. This was Kentucky District and was enumerated on 16 September 1850.
The 1860 Clay county, KY census still finds Mary Ann [Masagee] Robbins/Robins residing in the county. This time she is enumerated in dwelling & household # 911 which contains her son and daughter-in-law. Her son Absalom Robbins/Robins is head of household and the following is the enumeration and NOTICE, her son Absalom is listed as 10 years younger than is true age. I myself was enable to establish the whereabouts of Absalom in the 1850 census of Kentucky, North Carolina and Tennessee.
Absalom Robins, 25, born NC, farmer, no real estate value, $100 personal
Nancy, 20, born NC
Sara A., 4, born NC
Mary A., 1, born Jackson county, KY
MARY A., 71, born NC
The 1870 census we will not find Mary Ann Robbins/Robins but do find her son Absalom Robbins/
Robins in Jackson county. He is living in River Precinct # 7, in Middle Fork, Jackson county, KY. He was enumerated on 25 August 1870, on page 227-A & dwelling & family # 21.
The enumeration is as follows:
Absalom Robbins, 45, born NC, farmer, no real & personal estate value
Nancy, 36, born NC
Sarah A., 15, NC
Jacob 9, KY
James, 8, KY
Mary, 13, KY
Jane, 3, KY
William 2, KY
Lavinah, 1/12, KY
I will now conclude the enumerations of Abigail Robbins/Robins BALL. As previously mentioned they were in Clay County 1850 census. Since both Absalom and Abigail are in Clay county in 1860 one could assume that the part of Clay county which Abigail was living in 1850 was not the part that was annexed to form part of Jackson county.
The 1860 Clay county enumeration on 19 [my read] July 1860, Manchester, Ky, page 144 and
dwelling & household # 919 as follows:
Audison Ball, 39, born NC, farm laborer, $60 personal estate
Adaline, 37, NC [NOTE: her middle name is used in place of Abigail
Susanna, 14, NC
Soloman 12, NC {This place of birth IF CORRECT than Addison, Abigail & Mary Ann Masagee
Robbins/Robins DID NOT arrive in Clay Co before 1848]
Joshua, 9, Clay co
Mary 7, Clay co
Martha 6, Clay co
John 5, Clay co
Buchanan 4, Clay co
Unable to determine spelling but must be Cinthia, 1, Clay co.
The 1870 census finds Addison BALL and Abigail Robbins/Robins in Laurel County, KY. They were enumerated on 15 August 1870, on page 6 of precinct and page 124-B, at Kemper Voting Precinct, Hazel Patch, Laurel county, KY. They were dwelling # 45, L& family # 43, as follows:
Addison Ball, 48, NC, farmer, $100 Real and $1460 Personal estate
Abigail, 47, NC
John 15, KY
Buchanan 13 KY
Margaret A., 10, KY [this must be the one I assumed to have been Cinthia in 1860]
Cintha A., 3, KY
Charles, 6, KY
The 880 census finds Addison BALL& Abigail Robbins/Robins back in Clay county and in a different area than previously. They were enumerated on 3 June 1880 on precinct page # 6, regular page # 509-B. The place was in Bullskin, Clay county, KY and were enumerated in dwelling & family # 40
as follows:
Addison Ball 48 [YES same age as in 1870, so says ancestry.com, however my read under
maginification, it is a poor 5, and not the way the writes a 44.]
[Addison has some kind of disability, and I believe he was suffering from
ulcers. He was born NC, however for 1st time it shows his father was
born in Tennessee, while his mother was born in South Carolina and do
believe that these are incorrect]/
Abigail, 57, NC
Sinthia, 12, KY
John P.,4 25, KY, son, a mechanic and is a widower
Lilly F., 6, KY, grand daughter, daughter of John P.
Addison, Jr., 4, KY, grandson, son of John P.
Thomas 2, KY, grandson, son of John P.
John P. Ball, who was married to a Mary E., and from Kentucky Birth Records 1852-1910, it would appear that Mary E., maiden name was something like Ruize/Reid, though one resercher stipulates that she was a King. At the birth of Thomas J., in February 1878, John P. Ball and Mary E., were living in Rockcastle county, KY. In this 1880 census John P., is shown to be a widower, hence Mary E, died between the birth of Thomas J, in 1878 and June 1880.
A posting at ancestry.com, indicates that Addison Ball, husband of Abigail Robbins/Robins, died in 1881, and that John P., died in 1889.
It also should be noted that Abigail';s son, Soloman Ball in 1880, was living in Raccoon Precinct, Laurel county, Kentucky. This is the same precinct that the real Jonathan C. Robbins moved too shortly after 1880 from Jackson county, KY. Solomon was enumerated on 7 June 1880, in ED 5l6, sheet page 11, regular page 244, and dwelling #86, & family # 91 as follows;
Soloman Ball, 33, born, NC, farmer
Sarah E., wife, 20, KY
Cordelia, 4, daughter, KY
Charles, 1, son, KY
In 1900, we will find that Abigail Robbins/Robins Ball, is now a widow and living in North Carolina. Here she is in the housheld of son Dr. Soloman Ball, a physician, who is renting his house in Shoal Creek, Cherokee county, North Carolina. This is about the same location, that Abigail's sister Jane Robbins/Robins RUNION, and family that lived from about 1850 onward past 1880, however in 1900 and in this specific precinct, there is no Runion families to be found. This 1900 censu was enumerated on 15 June 1900, is of Shoal Creek, North Division, Cherokee county, North Carolina, ED 7 & on page 99-A. The enumeration is as follows:
Soloman Ball, 52, born August 1847, in NC, Physician
Dorcas, 31, born February, 1869, NC [this must be Soloman's 2nd wife]
Robert S., 7, October 1892, NC
Joshua M.S., 4, August 1895, NC
Walter R., 2, 1897, NC
Thomas J. Ball, nephew, 22, February 1878 KY [son of John P. Ball, Soloman's brother]
Adison Ball, nephew, 24, February 1876, KY
Abigill A., MOTHER, 77, born April 1823, NC
Before showing the whereabouts of Abigail Robbins/Ball in 1910, I will first show whereabouts of Dr. Soloman Ball. He still is living in Shoal Creek, Cherokee Co. NC. In this census it confirms that the 1880 census of a Soloman Ball, farmer, is indeed him and that he is in his 2nd marriage, and has been married 24 years in 1910, which would put his year of marriage as aroufnd 1885 or 1886. He was enulmerated on 4 May 1910, ED 42 or 72, sheet 10-A, page 108-A and D & F # 168. Below are those enumerated:
Dr. Soloman S. Ball, 62, NC, Physician [It says his mother Abigail Robbins born in Kentucky]
Dorcas. 4-. NC, 10 children born, 7 living & in household.
Robert S., 17, NC, druggist in store
Herschel, 14, NC, laborer, home farm
Raleigh, 133, NC, laborer, home farm
Eva, 10, NC
Solomon, 8, NC
Martha, 5, NC
Laban, 2, NC
A 1920 census of Knox County, Tennessee, has an enumeration of Soloman Ball. This enumeration, whose age and place of birth and of his parents correctly shdows a 72 lyear old Soloman Ball, in Ward 9th, Knoxville City, Knox co., Tennessee. He is not employed and is a boarder in a rental home of a 53 year old widowl, Sallie Goff. Sallie was born in Virgfinia, as were her parents. Sallie Goff is a practical nurse, whichleads one to believe that this indeed is the Dr. Soloman Ball, son of Addison Ball and Abigail Robbins/Robinsj, as Sallie Goff is in the medical profession as was Dr. Soloman Ball. The ony other person in household is a 20 year old Claude Goff, son of Sallie. He also was born in Virginia, as was his father and is employed das a timer in a shop.
I have tried to trace Dr. Soloman Ball's sons named Charles born 1879 in Kentucy, and the ones as indicated in 1910 censu born in North Carolina, Robert S., Herschel, Raleigh, Solomon Junior, and Laban, and have drawn a BLANK. What happened to them???
I also should point out the nephews that were in Dr. Soloman Ball;s 1900 household, I was able to find what I believe is Thomas J. Ball. Since he was born in Rockcastle county, Kentucky, son of John Ball and Mary E., he could have returned to Rochcastle, as in 1910 a 35 year old Thomas J. Ball appears alone and a widower.
This concludes PART FIVE, and will have further data on Abigail Robbins/Robins Ball and Jonathan C. Robbins/Robins, wife Emily and children in Part SIX hopefully by next week. My best to everyone and welcome any critics views. Take care and God Bless. Hal [Harold Smith]
