Another Killing At Wilson -Berger
Wilson-Berger was the scene of another killing Sunday night when Deputy
Sheriff Charles York shot and killed Henry Mason. The killing occurred at the
home of Hobart McClure, where Mason boarded and according to reports, Mason
had fired a sot in the McClure home when York and Earl Jones went to arrest
him. He declined to surrender his pistol to the officers and the killing
followed, York using a shot gun.
According to papers in the possession of Mason he was a world war veteran,
and had also been paroled from the penitentiary, for the murder of his
father. He had letters from people living about London and a check book on
the national Bank of London. He also had a pass over the lines of the
Louisville & National Railroad Company, stating he was a carpenter. The body
was brought to Harlan and embalmed and shipped to relatives in Artemus.
Mason is the third man to have been killed at Wilson-Berger in less than
a month, the other two being Will Pace and John Barnett, who killed each
other in a duel three weeks ago, after Pace who was a deputy Sheriff had
attempted to arrest Barnett as he was bringing a load of liquor into the
Wilson-Berger camp.
Mason was twenty six years old. He had only been at the Wilson-Berger a
few weeks and among the letters and papers in his possession was a letter
written Saturday but not mailed to his mother. No address was given, simply
being addresses to "Dear Mother."
