Charged with Killing Neighbor Near Wallins- Convicted One
Month After Crime.
A jury in Circuit Court Saturday sentenced, John Jess Saylor to life
inprisomment,
after a three day trial in which, Saylor was charged with having shot and
killed, John Harris at Ameron, near Wallins, just four weeks before the day
the jury reported the verdict.
The trial was started, Wednesday and the taking of testimony was not
completed until Friday afternoon. Judge J.H. Forester, argued the case for
the defense and Capt. B. B Golden, Commonwealth Attorney, closed for the
Commonwealth. The case was submitted to the jury about five o'clock Friday
and they did not make a verdict until Saturday afternoon.
The testimony showed an intimate relation between Saylor and Harris wife
and at the time of the killing, Harris was in search of his wife.
Saylor was indicted at the special Grand Jury impaneled at the civil term
of court
and his case was clocked for trial at the same term. He is the first man to
be given a life sentence in several years in Harlan County.
