Hidden Rifleman Fires on Two City Policeman
Halcomb, Price Have Narrow Escape Tuesday
Bullets and the crashing of cars reverberated through this little town
Tuesday to again disturb it's citizens, the second time in less than a week.
The bullets were aimed at two members of the police department who are now
under 5000.00 bond each pending grand jury investigation of a charge of
murder in the slaying of Gordon Gilliam last Friday.
Four cars were damaged when the two policemen leaped from their prowl car
letting it crash, uncontrolled into a parking lot, while they sought safety
from the rifleman's bullets behind a house.
Two of the bullets struck periously close to the officers, Clyde Halcomb
and Luther Price, while they were patrolling east, Cumberland. One bullet
pierced the top of the auto, the other through the corner, when the officer
pered around trying to locate the attacker.
The rifleman was hidden high on Looney Ridge, a spur off the highest peak
in Kentucky. Was not seen by any of the persons who rushed to the scene.
Opinions prevailing relative to the shooting are that someone was seeking
to revenge the slaying of Gilliam. No arrests have been made.
