I have seen several HATFIELD's on the list and thought this may be
of interest. This was a poem given to one of my relatives while he was
in a Yankee POW Camp during the Civil War. I understand that the
young man died shortly after writing it.

A poem written to James Umphlete by a friend, Calvin Hatfield,
18 years of age. written at Johnson Island, Sandusky Bay, Ohio(POW camp?) Nov 24th A.D. 1862 Typed by Debra Mauelshagen.

1st
When nature was sinking in stillness to rest
The last beam of daylight shone dim in the west
In sweet meditation I wandred my feet
O'er fields by pale moonlight in lonely retreat

2nd
While passing a garden I paused to hear
A voice faint and plaintiff of one that was there
The voice of the sufferer affected my heart
While pleading in anguish the poor sinners part

3rd
I listened a moment then turned me to see
What man of compassion the stranger might be
I saw him low kneeling upon the cold ground
The loveliest being that ever was found

4th
So deep was his sorrow so fervent his prayers
That down on his bosom Rolled sweat blood and teers
I wept to behold him I asked him his name
He answered Tis Jesus from heaven I came

5th
I am thy redeemer for thee I must die
The cup is most bitter but cannot pass by
Thy sins like a mountain upon me is laid
And all this deep anguish I suffer for thee

6th
How sweet was the moments that bade me Rejoice
His smiles o how pleasant how charming his voice
I flew from the garden to spread it a broad
I Shouted Salvation and Glory to God

7th
I'm now on my journey to mansions above
My soul's full of glory of light and of love
I think of that garden the prayres and the teers
Of that blessed stranger that banished my fears

8th
The day of bright glory is roling around
When Gabrial decending the trumpet shall sound
My soul then in rapture of glory shall rise
To gaize on that stranger with unclouded eyes
