PITTSBURG
Christmas passed off pleasantly with us; very little drinking or rowdying was
engaged in.
Green Swaner, an L. & N. brakeman on the morning crew, met with a serious
accident in getting his foot mashed Saturday night, at this place. Dr.
Givens attended him.
We have five Sunday Schools in our town, viz; Methodist Union, Christian,
Baxtertown, Baptist, East Pittsburg (Welshtown), and our colored people at
their church near the old Peacock work. They are all well attended, but we
hope to see the attendance in all of them increase.
Besides our local whiskey men we have an addition in that line the Jerry
Brewing Co., with a Mr. Hocker in charge, who we understand sells beer by the
case, keg or barrel. Our surroundings in the drinking line were bad enough,
but this "Den of the devil" will make it ten times worse for the extra
inducements of wholesale prices, so that at a trifling cost in coin, our
drunkenness will increase and, besides our young men, who would not go to a
"blind tiger," will be induced to take hold of the infernal stuff on account
of its cheapness and a little persuasion on the part of the devil's agents
and ropers-in and hangers-on, who are always plentiful around such "hell
holes." I am no lawyer, but I do not see how the said firm expects to do an
open door business in a local option county, and as the press of this country
is powerful, and knowing your feelings in regard to whiskey I ask you to use
your paper to help us down this open door way to damnation. CAMPBELL
