Died at the residence of her son, John B. Johnson, on January 10, 1901, of
old age and general debility, Mrs. Sally Ann Johnson, widow of the late John
Johnson, and daughter of Hardy and Delphia Hart, who were among the first
settlers in this part of the State, in about 1795. Her grandfather Ben
Harrison, was a near relative of Gen. William Henry Harrison, who was once
president of the United States. Mrs. Sally Ann Johnson, was born February
12, 1816, on the farm where Silas Hoskins now lives, on Rockcastle River, in
this county. She married to John Johnson in 1830, who died March 23, 1882,
aged 75 years. She was the mother of ten children, only three of whom
survive her, viz: John B., Ben F. and Leon Johnson. She outlived seven of
her children, three of her daughter in laws, her only son in law, quite a
number of her grand children and all her old neighbors. Mrs. Sally Ann
Johnson was a Christian in the broadest and truest sense of that word. She
joined the Baptist church at Mt. Pleasant in 1832 and was baptized by Elder
David Weaver and remained a true and faithful member of the same church for
69 years- until her death. She talked and prayed much for the Lord, dwelling
much on the mercy and goodness of God to all his people, urging and begging
everyone with whom she came in contact, to serve and obey the good Lord. She
was a kind and accommodating neighbor, having been known to lend the last
dust of meal she had and then go to another neighbor and borrow meal for
herself. If she ever had an enemy in her life or was ever heard to speak ill
of anyone, it was unknown.
Elder J. W. Masters in conducting a series of meeting at this place.
