February 8, 1901

Mrs. Carrie Nation was an early bird Tuesday. She arose at 4:30 in Topeka
and began smashing saloons. Two were wrecked as an appetizer for breakfast.

COURT ITEMS

Anderson Downey was sent to the pen for one year for striking and wounding
Douglas Sams with a deadly weapon.

John Peters was acquitted of the charge of the malicious cutting and wounding
of Stanley.

Tom Leak and Ed Smallwood were each fined $100 for selling liquor. A motion
for a new trial was overruled and they will have to either pay or replevy.

The grand jury has returned an indictment against C. J. McLear, charging him
with the murder of Sam Rodgers. He was admitted to bail in the sum of
$5,000. The case was called yesterday afternoon and both parties announced
ready and the jury is now being empaneled.

LOCALS CONTRIBUTED

Miss Susie and Alice Parker were both happy while spending the afternoon
together Sunday.

Mr. W. L. Owens, who has been visiting London very frequently for the past
month to see his girl, was absent Sunday afternoon.

Mr. W. I. Parker, of Piney Woods, is wanting a girl, and will pay from a
dollar to a dollar and a half a week.

Mr. James Stillings was in town Sunday afternoon to see his girl.

Miss Addie Stanifer, who has been making Richmond her home for the past two
years, is visiting in London.

Mr. G. A. Settle, while out riding his fine horse Sunday afternoon, got very
muddy.
