Taylor, Thomas Ed-Age 68, a resident of Revelo, Ky., departed this life
February 15, 1956. Mr. Taylor, a valuable and loyal employee of the Stearns
Coal and Lumber Company for some 47 years began work on the K & T Railway
and later transferred to the planning mill. Ed, a well known and respected
citizen of McCreary County, joined First Hickory Grove some 47 years ago,
and was a charter [member] of that church. He was also an ordained deacon
of the church and lived a faithful Christian life until death. His passing
was not only a great loss to his family and relatives but also to a host of
friends who knew and admired him. Funeral services were held at the First
Grove Baptist Church Friday, February 17, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Milford
Vahles, Rev. George King and Rev. Maynard Blevins officiating. Burial was
in the Lower Hickory Grove Cemetery. Mr. Taylor is survived by his widow,
Mrs. Rebecca Crabtree Taylor, three children, Miss Helen Taylor, Rev.
Charles Taylor and Chester Taylor, Revelo; three grandchildren; one brother,
Robert Taylor and two sisters, Mrs. Savannah Stephens and Miss Vicie Taylor,
all of Pine Knot; four half-brothers, William Taylor, Jellico Creek, Henry
and Daniel Taylor, Williamsburg and Millard Taylor of Jellico Tenn., and a
half sister of Cincinnati, Ohio. We feel our loss is his eternal gain in
glory.
Sexton, Sister Dessie, born April 30, 1883, deceased this life, June 21,
1956, age 73 years, 1 month and 21 days. She joined the Missionary Baptist
Church at New River at the age of 18, later came by letter to the United
Baptist Church at Byrges Creek, where she still remained a faithful member.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Sunbeam Chapter 236 of
Huntsville, Tenn. In 1905 she was married to Lindsay M. Newport to this
union were born 7 children. He and two of the children preceded her in
death. The children remaining are, Mrs. Johnny Wilson of Clinchmore, Tenn.,
Herbert Newport of Oak Ridge, Leon and Arnold Newport, both of Caryville,
Mrs. Henry Lay of Oneida. In 1919 she was married to Fealin Jeffers and to
this union were born 4 children. He and one of the children also preceded
her in death. Those remaining are Mrs. Oliver McGhee of Dayton, Ohio,
Marley Jeffers of the U. S. Army stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Melvin
Jeffers of Dayton, Ohio. Then in 1940 she was married to Jasper Sexton who
preceded her in death April 1945. Besides her children, she leaves one
brother, Seamon Sexton, Danville, Ill. 44 grandchildren, a number of
nephews and nieces and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her
absence. We feel our loss is her gain in glory.
Chandler, Brother Silas L.-Was born January 6, 1875, and departed this life
January 4, 1956. He leaves two sisters, Helen Mary Cook of Winona, Tenn.,
and Martha Pratt of Dalton, Ga., and a host of relatives and friends to
mourn his absence. Buffalo Baptist Church.
Lay, Sister Rachel Lee Oma King-Was born September 10, 1896 and departed
this life August 21, 1956. She was 59 years, 11 months and 11 days old.
She joined the Church at tan early age. She was a member of First Hickory
Grove Baptist Church and lived a faithful Christian until her death. She
was united in marriage to Can Lay December 24, 1934. She leaves 2 brothers,
Osper King of Strunk, Ky., and Ezra King of Revelo, Ky., and 2 sisters,
Elizabeth Waters, Revelo, Ky., and Pearlie King, Revelo, Ky. and a host of
relatives and friends to mourn her passing. We feel our loss is her eternal
gain in glory.
Thomas, Phebe Emily-Wife of John Thomas was born November 20, 1864. She
departed this life April 12, 1956 at the age of 91 years, 3 months and 22
days. She was a devoted wife and mother. She joined the New Freedom
Baptist Church at an early age, later moving her membership to Pine Creek
Baptist Church then to Grave Hill where she remained an active devoted
member as long as her health permitted. To know Aunt "Em" was to love her.
She leaves to mourn her absence 1 son, Rev. Leland Thomas and 2 daughters,
Mrs. Costlo Slaven and Mrs. Elzie Foster, also 23 grandchildren and a host
of other relatives and friends. We feel our loss is Heaven's eternal gain.
Terry, Leonard-Born September 14, 1861, departed this life, December 23,
1955. Age 94 years, 3 months, and 9 days. He was married to Lucy Anna West
and to this union were born ten children. He professed a hope in Christ and
joined the Grave Hill Church in his early life. He remained a faithful
member until death. He is survived by six daughters and four sons: Mrs.
Etta Smith, Oneida, Mrs. Lizzie Stephens, Whitley City, Ky., Mrs. Sallie
Burke, of Chicago, Ill., Nancy Thomas, Harriman, Tenn., Mrs. Zora Slaven,
Oneida; Mrs. Martha Smith, Armathwaite, Tenn.; Crawford Terry, Cincinnati,
Ohio; B. D. Terry and Rev. Calvin Terry, both of Oneida; Harry Terry,
Cooperative, Ky. His wife preceded him in death. One brother, Lindsey
Terry. 48 grandchildren and several great grandchildren and a host of other
relatives and friends. We feel our loss is his eternal gain in glory.
