Jones, Nancy Crabtree--Was born December 31, 1883 and departed this life
March 22, 1964. She joined the Lower Hickory Grove Church at an early age
and lived a faithful Christian life until her death. She was united in
marriage to Prince Paris Jones September 29, 1901, who preceded her in
death. To this union was born 8 children, 5 boys and 3 girls. One boy and
1 girl preceded their parents in death, Jessie Jones and Martha Jones. She
is survived by 4 sons, Walter Jones of Wayland, Kentucky, Leslie Jones of
Dayton, Ohio, Charlie Jones of Louisville, Kentucky and Johnnie Jones in the
U.S. Navy; 2 girls Ethel Miller of Stearns, Kentucky and Jewel Sloan of
Blair West, Virginia. She also raised a grandson, Billy Jones, in the U.S.
Navy; 28 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Eli Crabtree of
Perryville, Kentucky; Saul Crabtree of Revelo, Kentucky and Tige Crabtree of
Roseburg, Oregon. A host of friends and relatives to mourn her absence. We
know our loss is her eternal gain.
Shepherd, Goldie--Was born March 1, 1911 and departed this life
January 20, 1964 at the age of 52 years, 10 months and 20 days. She joined
the United Baptist Church at Leatherwood in 1955 then later came to the Mt.
Pleasant Baptist Church where she remained a member until her death. She
leaves her husband, Lewis Shepherd; one son, Johnny Shepherd and a host of
friends to mourn her passing. We feel that our loss is her eternal gain.
Owens, George Sherman--Was born March 20, 1879 and departed this life
December 5, 1963 at the age of 84 years, 9 months, and 15 days. He
professed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with the Mt. Zion
Baptist Church in Scott County, Tennessee. He was united in marriage to
Betty Cooper, April 16, 1905 and to this union was born six children. His
wife and two children preceded him in death. He was united again in
marriage to Nellie Smith, November 17, 1921 and to this union was born eight
children. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Nellie Owens; 11
daughters; 2 sisters; 1 brother; 24 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren
and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his passing. We feel our loss
is his eternal gain in glory.
Chambers, Rev. A.J.--Was born December 19, 1869 and departed this life July
23, 1964 being 94 years, 7 months and 4 days of age. He joined the New
Salem Church in February, 1887 and ordained a minister in 1900. He preached
the Gospel over 66 years. In 1898, he was married to Sallie Pennington and
to this union was born 7 children, 2 preceding him in death. The surviving
children are Eldon, Clegie, R.O., Marie and Celah. He served as Clerk of
New Salem Church for a number of years, was pastor of a number
of churches, Honorary pastor of Paint Rock Baptist Church and honorary
pastor of White Rock Baptist Church of which he was a charter member, and
led many souls to Christ. As our beloved brother Paul said "His building is
eternal in the Heavens, for our loss is his eternal gain in Glory."
Garrett, Rev. Joseph Samuel--"When my time comes, I want to be in
the pulpit preaching for the Lord." These words were spoken many times by
Rev. Joseph Samuel Garrett. Friday night, September 25, Rev. Garrett, who
was preaching in a revival in Muncie, Indiana, suffered a heart attack at
the close of his sermon at the East Side Baptist Church, Muncie, Indiana and
was dead on arrival at Ball Memorial Hospital. Services for the
widely-known and well-loved minister were conducted Monday, September 28,
from the Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Blevins and Rev. Steven
Sewell officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Helen Cemetery. West of
Oneida, in charge of arrangements. Rev. Garrett is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Lorinda Bell Garrett, Oneida, Tennessee; five daughters, Mrs. Gayson
Terry, Yorktown, Indiana, Mrs. Brady Goad, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Mrs. Ellie
Hammond and Mrs. Harrison Terry both of Oneida, Mrs. Clifford Goad,
Armathwaite, Tennessee; two brothers, Porter Garrett and James Garrett, both
of California, 24 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren. Rev. Garrett's
grandsons, Kenneth Hammond, Ray Hammond, Rev. Ira Brady Goad, Robert Lee
Goad, Rayford Terry and Leslie Lee Terry, served as pallbearers. A large
number of ministers from Scott and surrounding counties served as Honorary
Pallbearers. Rev. Garrett, 84, who had been in the ministry for the past 60
years, was visiting his daughter and son-in-law, Rev. and Mrs. Gayson Terry
of Route 2, Yorktown, Indiana. A memorial service was conducted at 7 p.m.
Saturday, September 26, in Muncie for Rev. Garrett. Rev. Garrett, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Shadrick Garrett, was born April 26, 1880 and during his long
ministry served as pastor of 33 churches in Scott, Campbell, Fentress,
Pickett Counties and Whitley County, Ky. He was married to Lorinda Bell
Range, January 20, 1901 and to this union were born 5 girls, Lucrea, Roxie,
Ellie, Flora and Ruth. He professed a hope in Christ at an early age and
joined the Oliver Baptist Church in November, 1893 and was baptized by his
father, Rev. Shade H. Garrett. In 1896 he moved to Mt. Helen, Tennessee and
was ordained as minister at the Mt. Helen Baptist Church in 1908. Rev.
Garrett,, in 1925, moved to Oneida and transferred his letter to the Oak
Grove Bethlehem Baptist Church where he was pastor for many years. He later
moved his letter to West Oneida, being pastor there for a number of years.
He was pastor at Opossum Rock Baptist Church at the time of his death. He
served in missionary work for the Southern and West Union Baptist
Association for eight years. He also conducted a gospel radio broadcast
from Knoxville, Tennessee for over a year. Churches where he was pastor are
as follows: CAMPBELL COUNTY - Stanfill Baptist Church; Elk Fork Baptist;
Newcomb Baptist. SCOTT COUNTY - New Haven Baptist; Buffalo Baptist; Black
Creek Baptist; West Robbins Baptist; New River Baptist; Huntsville Baptist;
Helenwood Baptist; Cherry Fork Baptist; Antioch Baptist; Bethlehem Baptist;
Opossum Rock Baptist; White Pine Baptist; Hazel Valley Baptist; Black Oak
Baptist; West Oneida Baptist; Tunnel Hill Baptist; Pine Grove Baptist;
Pentecost Baptist and Winfield Baptist. WHITLEY COUNTY, KENTUCKY - Pine
Knot Baptist; Worley Baptist; Fidility Baptist. PICKETT COUNTY - Oak Grove
Baptist. FENTRESS COUNTY - Fair View Baptist; Cedar Grove Baptist; New Hope
Baptist; Mt. Helen Baptist; Fellowship Baptist; Shirley Baptist; Honey Creek
Baptist. Rev. Garrett helped ordain the following for the ministry: Calvin
Terry, Willie Marcum, J. Wheeler Blevins, S. Porter Garrett, Gayson Terry,
Isaac S. Garrett, Omar Garrett, Dowal Lawson, Lensy Davis, Fayett Claborn,
Alford Garrett, Elmer Garrett, Steven T. Sewell, Leland Thomas, Freddie
Peters, Clay Slagle, Bill Parmley, Emit Abett, Henry Terry, Virgil Voiles,
Daniel Voiles, Willie Voiles, Levi Voiles, C.C. Cravens, Lee Smith, J.
Jeffers, Robert Burchfield, Luther Crabtree, A.J. Cope, Gilbert Phillips,
Jim Acres, Ves Chitwood, George Smith, Rhoads Acres. An estimated 1500
people paid their last respects to the well-loved minister on Sunday and
Monday prior to the funeral.
