Hurst, Mrs. Lou Frances Norman-Was born April 13, 1868. She died December
13, 1951 at the age of 83 years and eight months. She professed a hope in
Christ at the age of 16 and joined the Fellowship Baptist Church at
Armathwaite and lived a true Christian life. She was married to John Robert
Hurst, and to this union were born seven children, two of whom have passed
on before. Surviving are Mrs. Zona Coffee of Kentucky, Mrs. Fannie Crabtree
of Jamestown, Clem Hurst of Poplar Cove, Oliver Hurst and Mrs. Oma Jane
Brannon of Jamestown. She is also survived by her husband, John R. Hurst,
35 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren; four half brothers, Grant Norman,
L. J. Norman, Babe Norman and A. J. Norman; also one half sisters, Mrs.
Nettie Delk of Kentucky, and a host of friends and loved ones. Funeral
services were conducted at the First Baptist Church in Jamestown Friday,
December 14, at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. Virgil Voiles and Rev. W. F. Wright
officiating. Burial was in the Taylor Cemetery on Saturday. Our
grandmother always wished that there would be a pretty white blanket of snow
when she was laid away beneath the ground. God granted that wish. St. John
15-7 says this: "If we abide in me and may words abide is you, ye shall ask
what ye will and it shall be done unto you." And I John 3-22 reads: "And
whatsoever we ask we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do
those things that are pleasing in his sight." God bless our sweet old
grandmother in heaven. A granddaughter.-Cora E. Parker.
Lawson, William-Was born May 26, 1862 at Elk Valley, Tenn., and
departed this life March 21, 1952, being 89 years 9 months and five days
old. He was the son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth Lawson who preceded
him in death. He was married to the late Louisa Bowling and to this union
there were nine children born. Four of whom preceded him in death. He is
survived by Julia Sharp Lawson his wife by a second marriage, of Elk Valley.
Two sons and three daughters, Andy Lawson, Cincinnati, O., Leonard Lawson,
Richlands, Va., Mrs. Emma Hunter, Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Nannie Belle Newman,
Redash, Va., Mrs. Hester Waldron, Cincinnati, O., and twenty-three
grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren and two great great
grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother George Lawson,
LaFollette, Tenn, and a sister Nancy Lay, Elk Valley, Tenn. Uncle Bill was
a farmer by trade and had spent his entire life in this community. He was a
member of the Elk Fork United Baptist Church in which he took an active
part. He was well read on the scriptures and took great delight in giving
advice to other people and especially to the church. Uncle Bill has a host
of friends and relatives to mourn his passing.
Harness, Jasper-Was born Dec. 15, 1896, departed this life April
24, 1951, was baptized in the Bull Creek Church June 6, 1926, was ordained
as a deacon of the church Sept. 3rd, Saturday, 1929. He was a faithful
member of the church for over 25 years or until God sent the angel to call
him away. He lived seven days alike, he was always ready to give his
children advice how to live. Many times we have heard him praying asking
the Lord to be with the children until they made themselves ready to meet
God in Peace. He was married to Martha Lawson in 1917. To this union were
born 1 son Fred, 2 stepsons, Hugh L. and Arlie, 1 stepdaughter Artencey and
2 grandchildren, Willis Ray and Oma. He also leaves 4 brothers Johnie and
Clifford and Jesie and Arzo, two sisters Gertie and Mertie, he leaves many
friends to mourn his absence and may his children and brothers and sisters
prepare to meet in the air. May our loss be his eternal gain in Glory.
Harness, Ruth-Was born June 16, 1927 and was married to Fred D.
Harness on January 24th, 1944. To this union were born two children, 1 girl
and 1 boy, Othello and Frankie. She professed a hope in Christ and joined
the Missionary Baptist Church at Bull Creek and was baptized the first
Sunday in Sept. 1945. Sister Ruth drew her letter from this church the
First Saturday of June 1949 and joined the United Baptist Church of Bull
Creek Saturday July 16th, 1949. Sister Ruth came to both churches at Bull
Creek when she was able, also came to church when she had to be hauled to
Church. The last time Sister Ruth was at church was on Mother's Day at Bull
Creek, May the 11th, 1952. Sister Ruth lived a faithful Christian life
until the Lord called her away on August 14th at 1:30 o'clock am. 1952.
Sister Ruth lived 25 years, 1 month and 28 days. Her last words to her
mother, she asked mother to pray for the Lord to take her on. She told
mother not to cry that she was going to rest. Sister Ruth prayed all day
for the Lord to take her on, just before she passed on she looked up and
smiled a sweet smile and passed on. She leaves a husband and one son, Fred
D. Harness and Frankie, a mother Viola Harness and a step father Arzo
Harness and one brother Eugene Lawson and one sister Dorothy Harness and a
grandfather Freeman Harness and a host of friends and relatives. We are
hoping to meet Sister Ruth in heaven some sweet day.
Sexton, Sister Amanda-Departed this life December 6, 1951, age
about 70 years old. She professed a hope in Christ was baptized December
1906 and lived a devoted Christian life until death. She leaves to mourn
her loss an aged sister, several nephews and nieces and a host of other
relatives and friends. We feel our loss is her eternal gain in glory.
Sexton, Brother James William-Departed this life March 25, 1952,
age about 79 years old. He professed a hope in Christ and was baptized in
April 1896, and lived a devoted Christian life until death. His whole
interest and conversations were on the scriptures and serving the Lord. He
leaves to mourn his absence one son, one daughter, an aged sister, a number
of nephews and nieces and a host of other relatives and friends. We feel
our loss is his eternal gain in Glory.
Pike, Sister Nancy-Departed this life March 20th, 1952, age about
58 years old. She professed a hope in Christ and was baptized June 25th,
1910 and was a member of the Cherry Fork Baptist Church until her death. She
leaves to mourn her loss a husband, one son, one brother, four sisters and a
host of other relatives and friends. We hope our loss is her eternal gain
in Glory.
West, Sister Arbanna-Wife of Elder James H. West, departed this
life January 31st, 1952 at the age of about 36 years. She joined the Cherry
Fork Church by letter from the Tunnel Hill Baptist Church, on October 23rd,
1948 and lived a devoted Christian life until death. She leaves to mourn
her absence her husband, two sons, two daughters, an aged mother, two
brothers and a host of other relatives and friends. We feel our loss is her
eternal gain in Glory.
Lloyd, Lewis-Departed this life December 6, 1951, at the age of
75, he was member of Byrges Creek Church. He leaves a wife and fourteen
children; John of Rockwood, Foust of Clinchmore, Wallace, Howard and Charlie
of Clinton, Joe of Lewallen, Kentucky, Marion of Caryville, James L. and
Marley of Huntsville, Bessie of Clinchmore, Kizzie of St. Louis, Mo.,
Comedith and Delanie of Norma, Elizabeth and Ruby, Huntsville. He leaves
several grandchildren and friends to mourn his absence. We feel our loss is
his gain in glory.
Jones, Bart R.-Born in Pickett County on November 1, 1887,
departed this life on March 10, 1952 at the age of 64 years, 4 months and 9
days. He is survived by a number of relatives. He was a splendid citizen,
a member of the Black Creek Baptist Church, and had a large number of
friends. He was a faithful Christian to the end.
