Laxton, Bro. Amias-Was born April 16, 1879, deceased life December 17, 1953,
age 74 years, 8 months and 1 day. He professed a hope in Christ and joined
the Annadel Baptist Church April 23rd, 1950. Lived a faithful Christian
life until death. He was sadly missed by the church. He leaves a wife,
sister Elizabeth Laxton; 4 children, 3 girls and 1 boys to mourn his
absence. We feel our loss is his eternal gain in glory.
Hughett, Rev. Emmit L.-Born February 25, 1903, deceased this life May 8,
1954. He professed a hope in Christ and joined the New Salem Church in his
youth. He moved his letter to other churches. Later he brought his letter
to the Annadel Baptist Church July 5, 1953, and remained until death. He
leaves his wife, Sister Flora Byrd Hughett and 5 children-3 girls and 2
boys. Ethel Byrd, Mich.; Etta Lee Posey and Littie Posey, Oneida, R. 1;
Autrey Hughett, Ft. Knox, Ky.; and Roy Hughett, Indiana. 8 grandchildren to
mourn his absence. We feel that Bro. Emmit's work as a minister of the
Gospel and singing school teacher, will be missed in the many churches he
worked in but we feel sure that Bro. Hughett has gone to reap his reward in
glory.
Acres, Anna Butler-Daughter of M. C. and Bell Vann Butler was born in Scott
County, Tenn. on September 1, 1885, deceased this life on May 2, 1954, at
the age of 68 years, 8 months and 1 day. She married James Acres, January
22, 1911, and to this union were born 6 children, 4 of which preceded her in
death. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Charles Acres of Cincinnati,
Ohio, a daughter, Mrs. Ancil Russell, Orlando, Fla., also one son, and one
daughter by a former marriage, James Hatfield, of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Hattie
Williams, Beckley, West Virginia. 1 grandchild, 6 great grandchildren. 2
brothers, Frank Butler of Huntsville, Tenn., and Tom Butler of Los Angeles,
Calif. 3 sisters, Mrs. Mary Lloyd of Knoxville, Tenn., Mrs. Roddie Hughett
of Oneida, Tenn.; Mrs. Joe Hatfield of Vasper, Tenn., and a host of other
relatives and friends. Early in life she professed a hope in Christ, and
was a charter member of the Norma Baptist Church, at Norma, Tenn. Later she
moved her membership to the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Oneida, Tenn., where
she remained a member until her death. She was also a member of the Eastern
Star Sapphire Chapter No. 259 in Oneida, Tenn. Our loss is great, but we
feel that it is a gain to her.
Blevins, Melvina Miller-daughter of John and Darkie Miller, was born in
Scott County, Tenn. on August 20, 1906, departed this life January 18, 1954,
at the age of 47 years, 5 months, and 28 days. Surviving her are her
husband, Louis K. Blevins, of Oneida, Tenn.; 1 son, Herbert Blevins, Oneida,
Tenn.; 3 daughters, Mrs. Virgil Phillips, Oneida, Tenn., Miss Beatrice
Blevins, Oneida, Tenn., Mrs. Charles Bridges, Oneida, Tenn.; Mother Mrs.
John Miller, Muncie, Ind.; 4 sisters, Mrs. General Slaven, Oneida, Tenn.,
Mrs. Della Beaty, Muncie, Ind., Mrs. Mitchell Foster, Muncie, Ind., Mrs. Dan
Good, Muncie, Ind. and a host of friends and relatives. She professed a
hope in Christ and joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church at Oneida, Tenn. in
July 1944, where she remained a member until death. We feel that our loss
is her eternal gain.
Smith, Lucy-Was born March 7, 1880, deceased this life November 5, 1953, age
73. She joined the Fidelity Church some years ago. She came to Oak Grove
Church later by letter. She was a faithful member until death. We believe
our loss is her eternal gain in glory. She leaves two children, William A.
Smith and Marie Smith to mourn her absence.
Smith, Ezra Barton-Age 82, the son of the late Joseph Terry Smith and Alley
Reed Smith passed away at his home in Oneida Friday afternoon after an
extended illness. Mr. Smith was one of our best known citizens, having
lived here all of his life. He was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church
and was a deacon in the church for 27 years. Beside his wife he is survived
by 2 sons and 1 daughter, Fred L. and Richard W. Smith of Oneida, Mrs.
Beulah Welch of Winter Haven, Fla., one sister, Mrs. Zora Sackrider of
Science Hill, Ky., One brother, W. C. Smith of Orlando, Fla. 8
grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the
Bethlehem Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. with Revs. Roy Blevins
and Hugh Wildick officiating. Burial in Reed Cemetery, Oneida, Tenn.
Holladay, James Henry-Was born at Sunbright, Morgan County, Tenn. on
February 12, 1884, departed this life August 4, 1954, at the age of 70
years, 5 months and 22 days. He was married to Bell Jennings on August 27,
1915. Besides his wife, he leaves; one son, Robert Holladay of Oneida,
Tenn.; one daughter, Mrs. Cathleen Dagley, of Oneida, Tenn.; 2 brothers,
Dudley Holladay, Knoxville, Tenn., Alex Holladay, Ashville, N.C. 2 sisters,
Mrs. S. N. Oakley, Sunbright, Tenn., Mrs. C. B. Marcum, Danville, Ky. 3
grandchildren, and a host of other friends and relatives. He professed a
hope in Christ and joined the Baptist Church at Highsplint, Ky., in 1931,
later he moved his membership to the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Oneida,
Tenn., where he remained a member until his death. We feel that our loss is
his gain to him.
Harness, Vermon-Was born March 18, 1924, departed this life June 16, 1954.
He professed a hope in Christ and was baptized August 3, 1948. He is
survived by his wife, Georgia, and mother, Ora Mae Griffith and grandmother,
Marry Harness, father in law, Delus Gibson and 3 brothers, J. C., Garlon and
Finely Gene. He lived every day like a Christian. A place is vacant in the
home that can never be filled. Our hopes are all sincere that we will meet
him again on the great beyond, where there will be no sad farewells.
Hood, Sister Rosettie Massengale-Joined the Corinth Church by experience of
grace January 22, 1915 and was baptized in the church where she remained a
member until death, January 1954, being 39 years she was with us. We feel
our loss is her eternal gain in heaven to meet her father, John Tom
Massengale, who was also a member with us, her brother, Andy, and more
relatives who we feel she will meet in glory. She leaves her aged mother,
Nancy Massengale, her husband McKinley Hood; 2 children, a boy and girl; 6
brothers and one sister to mourn her absence. We pray they all meet her in
heaven so the family circle won't be broken in the City of God.
Childress, Sister Hettie-Was born November 30, 1906 and departed this life,
September 5, 1954, at the age of 47 years, 9 months and 25 days. She was
united in marriage to Dewey Childress and to his union were born 4 children,
2 sons, Harold Childress of Pioneer, Tenn., Dewey Childress, Jr., of
Pioneer, Tenn. 2 daughters, Eva Long of Huntsville, Tenn., and Miss Norma
Jean Childress of Pioneer, Tenn., also 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Sister
Childress joined the Pioneer Baptist Church in the year 1940 and when the
Jakes Branch United Baptist Church was organized, she moved her letter from
the Pioneer Church to Jakes Branch Church and went in as a charter member.
She remained with this church until death. A vacant place is in our home
and church, but we feel our loss is her eternal gain in glory.
Perkins, Mrs. Tressie-Born March 10, 1879, passed away July 13, 1954.
Survivors: 2 sons, Perry and Johnny Perkins and 5 daughters, Jane Mills,
Martha Cooper, Nannie Lawson, Marie Smiddy and Bertha Beever. She has 19
grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was a member of Elk Fork
Baptist Church for a number of years. Our loss is heaven's gain.
Boyatt, Mrs. Rachel-Wife of the late Lewis Harvey Boyatt, passed away at the
home of her daughter, Mrs. Eva West, Tuesday, November 3, 1953. Her
husband, preceded her in death by 1 month and 18 days. She was a member of
the United Baptist Church and was a faithful member until death. Survivors
are: 3 sons, Willie, Fred and Lester Boyatt, all of Oneida; 6 daughters,
Mrs. Florence Maxwell, Mrs. Eva West, Mrs. Lola Slaven, Mrs. Mavis Slaven,
Mrs. Dorothy Foster, all of Oneida, and Mrs. Nola Tapley of Pine Knot, Ky.,
and 1 sister, Mrs. Millie Stephens of Oklahoma. 62 grandchildren and 34
great grandchildren. Burial was in Foster Cross Roads Cemetery. We feel
our loss is her eternal gain in glory.
