The following are excerpts from the McCreary County Record (newspaper). I
hope some of the veterans mentioned here are with us on the lists or at
least that their children or grandchildren are.

*28 October 1941*

Mrs. C.W. Hume, local draft board, announced the calling of seven men.

Azriah Dillard GRIFFIS, Smithtown, and John Sanford WHITE, Wiborg, are on
duty as soldiers in Iceland.

*02 Dec 1941*

A Whitley City man is the first McCrearian to be rejected for the draft ...
he's too tall at
6 feet 9 inches.

A Barthell man was arrested for adultery and was then re-arrested on a
federal charge
of evading the draft, the first McCrearian to be charged with draft evasion.

An Army deserter was arrested.

*09 Dec 1941*

America is at war with Japan. Attack is made on bases while peace talks are
under way.

Three hundred individuals are taking physical exams at induction center in
Somerset.

Navy is lowering enlistment standards to allow enlisting for two, three, or
four years.

Local boys stationed in and around Honolulu are (list not complete) Lloyd
SOULEYRETTE, Parkers Lake; Burdis NEAL, Stearns; Fred MORGAN, Jr.; Stearns,
Arthur BOYD, Revilo;
Ed HELTON, Jr., Whitley City; Rufus SIMMS, Greenwood; and Kenneth PHILLIPS,
Stearns, on the USS West Virginia, reported struck.

Delynn ANDERSON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Anderson, Stearns, and James
ESTES, son of Lou Estes, will graduate from the Air Corps Advanced Flying
School. First men from the county to become lieutenants in the U.S. Army
Air Corps.

Sgt. Joe FOSTER retired from the Army after 30 years.

*20 Jan 1942*

War Relief goal of the American Red Cross not met yet.

Civil Defense and Americanism Council was formed with J.C. BALDWIN,
Chairman, Lester COOPER, Vice Chairman, and E.S. HETH, Corresponding
Secretary and Treasurer.

Red Cross needs First Aid textbooks.

Worley Sunday School gave entire Sunday donation to Red Cross War Relief
Drive in the amount of $3.35.

$51 in Defense Stamps were sold at Stearns Graded and High Schools.

Cumberland National Forest increased timber sales to help the war effort.

Two defense training classes are in progress [at local schools].

Thornwald LEAR, Seaman 1st class of U.S. Coast Guard, is visiting his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.R. Lear, of Stearns.

Herbert LOVETT, U.S. Border Patrol, is home visiting his sisters, Mrs. Jess
Young and Miss Thelma Lovett, for 2 days.

D.C. REID, employee at Stearns Store No. 3, is taking entrance exam for
u.S. Merchant Marines.

Robert H. FLEMING, Navy, was commended for his efforts in rescue of
survivors after sinking of USS Rubin James on Oct. 31, 1941.

Paul ROWE, U.S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ledford Rowe, was home visiting.

Paul REDMAN was accepted for Naval Reserve.

"War Clouds in the Pacific" will be shown at Stearns Theatre. The movie
documents danger zones in the theatre of operations and summarizes events
leading up to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor.

Seven men were drafted: William Clelly HILL, Strunk; Arthur Ray OWENS,
Nevilsville; Dillard REYNOLDS, Smithtown; Estle DAVIS, Worley; Woodrow
GILREATH, Holly Hill;
Clyde H. TAYLOR, Sawyer; Woodrow LEVERIDGE, Whitley City; and alternate,
Herbert ROWE, Stearns.

Recently opened draft center is located in Somerset.

Pvt. Kirby W. BELL, son of O.A. Bell, Marshes Siding, was recently
transferred to the Army Air Corps Gunnery School.

Max H. RODER enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

Pvt. Arthur E. BRYANT, son of Crit Bryant of Hill Top, graduated from
airplane mechanics course in U.S. Army Air Corps.

*Feb. 3, 1942*

Citizens are warned that sugar rationing will start soon.

War Relief Fund Drive exceeded its quota by raising $2,133.30.

The third registration under the Selective Service Act is set for February 16.

Mitchell WALKER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar R. Walker, Whitley City, has
gone from
Corporal to Technical Sergeant in 3 months while in the Army.

Three men, Proctor MORRIS, Whitley City, Lee BYRD and Clyod STEPP, recently
released from the Army due to age, have been recalled for service.

Pine Knot PTA met and announced plans to award prizes of $3, $2, and $1 in
Defense Stamps for spelling bee winners at Pine Knot.

B.B. BALLOU, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ballou, Parkers Lake, was initiated
in the Order of the Great White Bear when he crossed the Artic Circle
aboard the USS Mississippi.

Chester HETH, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Heth, Stearns, has been accepted
into the U.S. Navy.

Kendrick ROY, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Roy, Stearns, was accepted into
Army Air Corps.

Sgt. Phil PRICE is home on leave due to serious illness of his father, Jim
Price, of Marshes Siding.
