County is asked to raise $2000 in the War Fund Drive for the Red Cross.
A total of 326 men were examined by the U.S. Army Medical Board Monday and
Tuesday at Somerset.
Defense Bond Club formed.
Tire sales were banned beginning Dec. 11 till Dec. 22.
McCrearians are ready to serve.
State now on wartime basis.
Roman STEPHENS, son of George Stephens, Attorney, is stationed aboard the
carrier, USS Lexington.
James A. ESTES and Delynn ANDERSON, both of Stearns, received their wings
and bars as liietenants.
Mr. and Mrs. W.T. SUMNER have received word that their son, Edwin, is safe
on a hospital ship at Pearl Harbor.
Rufus and Robert SIMMS, Greenwood, are stationed on the USS Chicago.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred MORGAN, Stearns, have heard from their son, Fred Morgan,
Jr. and he is safe.
Bonnie SHELTON has joined the Navy.

A day of prayer is scheduled for New Year's Day at request of President
Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Red Cross Roll Call Drive completed with the largest membership ever listed.
Autompbile production cut to the bone.
Whitley City school children are gathering paper to be used in defense work.
Cpl. Noble ROSS, Paunch Creek, was shot and killed on Christmas Eve on
Paunch Creek.

Tire rationing plans allot McCreary County 14 new tires for January.
Arnold GRIFFIS, son of Mrs. Jennett Griffis of Greenwood, has advanced to
3rd class aviation machinist mate at the Naval Air Station.
John J. WRIGHT, Stearns, has joined the Navy.
Sgt. Orist. O. BARNETT returned to post at Pine Camp, N.Y. Barnett is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Barnett, Smithtown.

McCreary Countians were assigned order numbers for the draft.
The next call for draftees will be April 23.
Earnest FREEMAN, son of former deputy sheriff, Bill Freeman, joined the
U.S. Marines. Freeman is a former chemistry teacher at the county high school.
Men between the ages of 44 and 64 will be required to register for the
draft on April 27.
Kendrick ROY, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Roy, Stearns, is leaving to
attend pre-flight training with the U.S. Army Air Force in Santa Ana, Calif.
Lt. Homer RAMSEY is homeon leave, visiting his mother, Mrs. Elsie Ramsey,
circuit court clerk.
Earl SMITH, son of H.D. Smith, Revilo, has joined the U.S. Navy.
Metal collapsible tubes and used razor blades are being collected [for the
war effort] at the soda fountain in Stearns.

The Victory Book Campaign received 70 books from Pine Knot.
The national emergency has caused a drop in enrollment at the University of
Kentucky.
Mrs. C.W. Hume, clerk of the Selective Service Board, will be giving new
registrants serial numbers this week.
Pvt. Lloyd SOULEYRETTE, stationed at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu,
escaped injury in the raid on Dec. 7.
Pvt. Silas S. OWENS, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Owens, Sawyer, graduated from
Chanute Field branch of the U.S. Army Air Corps Technical Schools.
Local rationing board gave six persons tire certificates last week, using
up teh entire allotment for the month of March.
Housewives are being assured that all efforts are being taken to make sugar
available for canning this summer.
