James S. Matthews , 90, Stearns, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 1974, at Scott
County Hospital, terminating a lingering illness. His wife, Mrs. Vada Benge
Matthews, survives. The son of Joe L. Matthews and Mahala Vaughn Matthews,
both deceased, he was born Feb. 1, 1884, in Wayne County, Ky. He lived all
his lifetime in Wayne and McCreary Counties. He was a retired coal miner and
a member of the Concord Baptist Church. Survivors, besides his wife, include
three daughters, Mrs. Pauline Bell, Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Josephine Disko,
Park Ridge, Ill., and Mrs. Bonnie Stephens, Cynthiana, Ky.; a son, Hobert
Matthews, Milwaukee, Wis.; one brother, Charlie Matthews, Batavia, Ohio; a
sister, Mrs. Rhoda Ledbetter, Strunk; and nince grandchildren. Funeral
services were held Sunday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Burial was in Hickman Cemetery. Pallbearers were Earl Bell, Jimmy Bell,
Donald Stephens, Johnny Stephens, and Hubert Corder. Officiating minister
was Rev. Curtis Burnette. McCreary County Funeral Home was in charge of
