Ruth Ella Thomas O'Bryan was born on May 5, 1916 at Stearns, Kentucky. She died incidental to aging on September 2, 2005 in St. George, Utah.
She was the third child of Ella Boshears and Mitchell Thomas. At age 17 she attended college in Maryville, Tennessee and later Bowling Green, Kentucky to obtain a teaching certificate. Riding company shuttle trains, she taught elementary school in small mining towns located in Kentucky.
She married David Basil O'Bryan in 1937 moving to Corbin, Kentucky. It was in this small town, that a large decayed tree from the neighbor's yard fell on her during a wind storm. The resulting injury, surgeries at Mayo Clinic and steel braces would shape events for the rest of her life and restrict her mobility.
Employment opportunity facilitated a move to Princeton, West Virginia in 1947. Later in the 1960's she and her husband owned and operated 11 discount retail stores in Virginia and West Virginia. As the effects of the accident became more pronounced, she relocated to Tucson, Arizona in 1972 to be closer to children and grandchildren living in California and Arizona. Since her move to St. George, Utah in 1994 she has had to accept a curtailment of activities and the lack of mobility.
She is survived by her children, David B. O'Bryan of Hacienda Heights, CA and Margaret O'Bryan Hooks of St. George, UT; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her brother, Frank Thomas of Somerset, Kentucky; and a sister Francis Thomas Dobbs of Franklin, KY. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, a brother and a grandson.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Ridgeview Garden and Durham Care for their sympathetic, gentle and kind assistance given when Ruth was under their watchful care.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 5, 2005, 11 a.m., Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, UT. Visitation will be held Monday, 10-10:45 a.m., prior to the services at the mortuary. Interment will be in the L.D.S. Cemetery in Tucson, Arizona. Arrangements are under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary
