Gorman is my 3rd Cuz once removed. The "removed" means that our relationship crosses a generational line from a common ancester.

That is, 1st cousins are related to a common grandparent.

2nd cousins are related to a common great grandparent.

3rd cousins are related to a common gg-grandparent.

And so on...

A 3rd cousin once removed means that his common gg-grandparent is my parent's gg-grandparent and i am once removed.

If we were 3rd cousin twice removed that means that one of us has a gg-grandparent who is the gg-grandparent of the other's grandparent.

Does that make sense to you? And, yes, canonically and by civil law, a 3rd cousin once removed is equivalent to a fourth cousin.
