George B. McClelland Perkins and Susie Jane Trammell Perkins are my great-grandparents. His parents were Elijah Perkins and Sarah Jane Mills Perkins. Elijah was the son of William Perkins and Rebecca Shepherd Perkins. William is the son of Jabez Perkins. William and Rebecca are buried at the Jellico Creek cemetery, which is fitting since they deeded the land that the church and cemetery are on to the church in 1837.
Elijah was born in 1838 and died of smallpox while serving in the Union Army on March 28, 1865. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. Elijah and Sarah had one son prior to his death, George B. McClelland Perkins born April 26, 1864. Sarah applied for and collected her widow's pension from the federal government. Following Elijah's death, Sarah had a farm at Coopersville in Wayne County, and gave birth to three more sons: William Prince Perkins (1876-1955); Ivory "Ives" Perkins (1879-1951);and Lee Perkins. While passing through Wayne County after a battle in Glasgow in October 1863, R. G. Armstrong, a Conferderate surgeon, wrote the following to his colonel:
"The water supply being brackish and scanty, we stopped along the wagon road for fresh water from a farm spring. While replenishing our supply, it was necessary to take as prisoner one Sarah Jane Perkins to prevent the word of our presence from being spread. Her removal with our company did not seem necessary as she was sworn by Pvt. Cooper to be a loyal daughter of the Confederacy from a good Tennessee Family. We felt it safe to leave her behind as we departed under cover of darkness."
I find that to be very interesting, considering her husband was serving with the Unioin Army at the time. My great,great-grandmother Sarah Jane Perkins must have been very resourceful...
George B.McClelland Perkins married Susie Jane Trammell, daughter of Rufus and Nancy Manning Trammell. He was a timberman and mule driver. George and Susie were charter members of the First Baptist Church of Whitley City.
They were the parents of 8 children: Jesse Ivory Perkins (1887-1968); Nancy Jane Perkins (1890-1892); John W. Perkins (1893-1949); Sam W. Perkins, my grandfather, (1897-1956); Ella M. Perkins Swain (1900-1937); Martha E. Perkins (1905-prior to 1910); and Marion Rufus Perkins (1908-1962).
George B. McClelland died June 10, 1933. Susie Jane Trammell Perkins died August 27, 1929. They are buried at the Bethel Cemetery.
My father is George McClellan Perkins, named by his father Sam after his father, George B. McClelland Perkins. And to keep the name alive, my father named me Steven George Perkins.
I have a few photos of George B. McClelland and Susie Perkins, and some of their children.
I hope this helps ties up some lose ends. For some reason, Elijah often comes up being the missing link when folks are researching his father William and his grandfather Jabez.
