EDITH STEPHENS HAMMONDS
Mrs. Edith Stephens Hammonds passed away Sunday, April 8, 2007, at the Scott County Hospital in Oneida, Tennessee. She was 79 years old.
Funeral services were Thursday, April 12, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Pine Knot Funeral Home with Reverend Cyrus Byrd officiating. Interment was in the Smith Cemetery on Roundtop Road.
She was born in Pine Knot on April 11, 1927, the daughter of the late Luther and Savannah Taylor Stephens. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Painter and son-in-law Charles Painter, a son-in-law Robert Smith, four brothers Prince, Paul, Howard and Cleve R. Stephens and a sister Letha Stephens.
In June, 1970 she was married to Mr. Donald Hammonds. Mr. Hammonds resides on the Bethel Road in Pine Knot.
Other family members include a son Roger Ross and his wife Sharon of Saluda, South Carolina and a daughter Beverly Smith of Dayton, Ohio. Brothers are Amon (and Rosemary) Stephens of Somerset, Joe Lee (and Glennis) Stephens of Oneida, Tennessee. Sisters are Eva Klundt of Pine Knot, Nannie (and Ronald) Griffith of Shephardsville, Kentucky, Trannie Bell also of Shephardsville, Charlene (and Luster) Strunk of Strunk, Kentucky, and Faye Foster of Largo, Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Hammonds have nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great-granddaughter on the way.
Ms. Hammonds had worked for National Cash Register in Dayton, Ohio for approximately 18 years, then moved to Clyde, North Carolina where she worked at the Broyhill Baptist Children's Home for more than 20 years. In 1992 she and Donald moved home to Pine Knot where she delved into her favorite pastime, genealogy. She was a member of the McCreary County Historical and Genealogical Society.
Pine Knot Funeral Home assisted the family with funeral arrangements.
