Message Board Post:

Dear Dennis,

I came across your message tonight. Yes, William Riley (Billie) Kidd, husband of Elizabeth Gilreath, is the son of Larkin Kidd and his wife Elizabeth Jones. This is documented by the fact that he purchased Larkin's land in 1848 before his father's death in 1853, and backed up by the well-researched history of this family done by Rick Carson, a descendant. Because Billie Kidd lived until the beginning of the 20th century, and had many descendants, his family history is well known.

William Riley Kidd married Elizabeth Gilreath in Whitley Co, KY, 24 Aug 1848. He lived ca 1824-1900, and she lived ca 1832-1901. They had as many as 17 children, of which 16 have been identified by name. One of their sons was Granville Kidd, according to William Riley Kidd's descendants.

William Riley Kidd left a will, written 4 Sept 1896 and proven 22 July 1901. He ran a mill, and left the mill and land to sons Albert E. and Marion, who were among his younger sons still living with their mother in 1900. The will was filed in Wayne Co, KY. Granville Kidd is not named in the will, but he is found in the household of William Riley and Elizabeth Kidd on both the 1870 and 1880 censuses.

On 1 Sept 1848, just after his marriage, William Riley Kidd purchased for $200 land from Larkin Kidd on the Little South Fork River. Larkin died in 1853; he did not leave a will, but there was an estate settlement in Wayne Co.

Elizabeth, Larkin's widow, married second Jonathan Abbott in 1858. Larkin Kidd and Elizabeth Jones married in Tazewell Co VA ca 14 Jun 1810 (date of marriage bond). The move to Kentucky, to Wayne Co, came soon thereafter.

Larkin Kidd, b ca 1774 in Virginia, d 1853 in Wayne Co, KY, was the son of William Kidd, who settled in Tazewell Co, VA. William's wife or wives are unknown. William may have died as early as 1801 in Tazewell Co, VA. I descend from Larkin's brother Elijah, the only of the sons to stay in Tazewell Co, VA, on the Clear Fork of Wolf Creek in present-day Bland Co, VA. Larkin and the other sons Elias and Sherrod all moved to the Wayne Co, KY, area by the 1810s/1820s.

William Kidd, birth and death dates unknown, was the son (perhaps the eldest son) of Aaron Kidd of Albemarle Co, VA, and his wife Susannah. Her maiden name is not known. Aaron died in 1776, when his will was probated in Albemarle Co, VA. They lived in the part of Albemarle that now lies in Fluvanna Co, VA, on the Roundabout Creek on the north side of the Rivanna River.

Aaron Kidd was the son of William Kidd of Middlesex Co, VA, and wife Margaret. Her maiden name is not known. William and Margaret both died in the spring of 1727. They had at least 12 children, most of whom moved westward to the Virginia frontier--many settling in Albemarle Co--in the years following their parents' deaths.

William Kidd was the son of Thomas Kidd, the immigrant ancestor to Virginia, who came to the colony by 1646, and wife Jane, whose maiden name is not known. Thomas died in 1680, leaving two sons Thomas II and William. The land owned by Thomas Kidd I was passed on by inheritance, or primogeniture, to his oldest son Thomas II and his heirs, leaving the heirs of William landless. This likely prompted their move out of Middlesex Co into western parts of Virginia.

I have corresponded with descendants of the William Riley Kidd family for many years, and I must say that I have never heard a story about William Riley Kidd being killed by any of his sons. His descendant Rick Carson published a lengthy manuscript history of this family several years ago, and no such story was mentioned. Rick knows this family intimately and had much help on his manuscript from many cousins in the area.

The clipping that someone posted earlier to this site doesn't look like a newspaper article to me, but looks as if it came from one of the many county Heritage Books, which collect and publish stories about local history and the families who lived in the area. Such articles are typically unsourced, as was this one.

I do not believe this story to be true. If you will email me directly at , I will be glad to provide you a way to reach Rick Carson. I do not visit this site often, so if you have questions, please feel free to email me directly.

I hope this is helpful to you in your search.

Sandra Kidd
descendant of Elijah Kidd, brother to Larkin Kidd
