Lynda,
Limpy John is allegedly to have murdered Remines Combs somewhere between 1900
and 1918. Remines was in the 1900 Perry Census on Masons Creek with his family
but I couldn't find him after that. His wife died in 1918 being listed as a
widow. John was (allegedly) represented by a cousin, the judge was a cousin,
and the sheriff was a cousin. They got him off by pleading insanity. He
spent a few
weeks in Lexington Eastern State, getting off free of the charges. It is a
documented statement in the works of Mae Frazier on the Combs family.
Now, I have the testimony of my family, especially my grandmother, Flora Combs
Martin concerning the Life and Times of One Hoppy John, as she called him. She
was scared to death of him. My mother, Flora's daughter said that the man was
not as evil as her mother made him out to be. There is a family history on all
this which is very mysterious, and most of all, funny.
As I explained to you before, I am 71, (72 today, happy birthday to me)
so I cannot search much of anything except the internet. Such joy in my old
age. I live in Lexington, so I envy you and your researching family being
able to go to UK and Frankfort. I know the answer to all the questions that
I have are at our fingertips these days.
After I talk with Frank Mitchell I hope to be able to share with the mailing
list what we have put together concerning the Martin clan of Lotts Creek.
Thank you so very much for your personal interest in our hunger for truth
concerning our heritage. You are a blessing.
Ann
