Helen, this Register Report of the Lane family was compiled by Fred
Lane. This email consists of 18 generations of Lanes and represents one
sixth of the total report. I will be sending the rest over the next few
days.

Ralph Lane

First Generation
----------------------------------------

1. Reginald Lane Sir. ®1

All information from the research of Brenda Esslinger of Knoxville.

The following information from Sir Reginald de Lane through Thomas Lane
came from the following: 1. The Soldiers of Va. Pt.2. 2. Penelope
Johnson Papers, Chattanooga Library, Chattanooga, TN. 3. The Landed
Gentry by Burke 4. The Battle Abby Roll.

Lineage.--The Ancient family of Lane came into England with William the
Conqueror. William (1027-1087) 1st Norman King of England 1066-1087 from
Falaise, France.

Sir Reginald de Lane was the grandfather of Adam who was living at
Hampton during the reign of Edward I (1272-1307). Adam was the
grandfather of Richard who was living 9th year of reign of Edward II
(1307-1327). Andrew living 1337. John, Richard married 9th year reign of
Edward II I (25 Jan 1335-24 Jan 1336) to Elizabeth de la Hyde. John
married 11th Year reign of Henry VI (1 Sept 1432-31 Aug 1433) to Margery
Egerton . Ralph married Joyce Cresset. He died 1477. Richard married
15th year reign Henry VII (22 Aug 1499-21 Aug 1500) to Anne Harcourt.
John born 1512 died 15 Nov. 1576 married Catherine Patrick of King's
Bromley . King's Bromley became the Lane family seat. Francis, Burke's
list him as Thomas. Died 31st year reign Elizabeth I (17 Nov. 1588-Nov
1589) married Catherine Grentham. John died reign of James I
(1603-1625). Married Jane Littleton. Thomas died 1660 married Alice
Bagot. They had the following children: John, Richard, Jane, Walter,
William of whom the Irish family sprang, Withy, Anne and Mary. Thomas,
John and Jane were instrumental in saving the life of King Charles II
after the battle of Worcester. They took him into their home and dressed
him as a servant and Jane with the crown jewels hid on herself let him
ride her horse and took him near Bristol where he could leave the
country. For this the Lane's received a special Coat of Arms.

There is no proof that Richard the son of Thomas was the Richard of
the West Indies and there is no proof that Samuel who came to Maryland
was the son of Richard. The only thing that I have found to connect the
line this way is the Lane family in Ireland. As stated above from
Burke's the Irish Lane's came from this family and Samuel Lane in his
will mentions Nephew/cousin in Ireland.

Major Samuel Lane of Maryland is probably from this line, but his exact
relationship is unknown.

From Larry James, "The Ancestry & Descendants of Major Samuel Lane."

Written history in "Claiborne Co Historical Society Reflections," ( p 4,
Spring 1992, Vol 10, No 2, written by Annabelle Neil Larabee) indicated
that
Thomas Lane Esq who married Jane Bagot was a son of Thomas Lane who died

Burkes' Landed Gentry Ancestral File - LDS Family History Center -

They had the following children:
i.John ®1.

Some history from Larry James, "The Ancestry & Descendants of Major
Samuel Lane." But he did not consider him as the uncle of Major Samuel
Lane of Maryland.

He was a Colonel of the King's forces and a personal friend of Charles
II, whom he received at Bentley after the Battle of Worcester and from
which place he was conveyed by Jane Lane in safety. He was said to have
been offered a peerage which he refused.

John married Athalia Anson ®1.

16ii.Richard (~1597-1656)
iii.Jane ®1. Born in England. Jane died on 9 Sep 1689.

The Lane crest commemorates the heroic action of Mistress Jane Lane ,
sister of Sir Thomas Lane of King's Bromley. After the battle of
Worcester, she rode from Sttraffordshire to the south coast upon a
strawberry roan horse, with King Charles II as her serving-man. For this
, the family was granted the canton of England as an augmentation to
their arms and were later granted the crest of the demi-horse.

From Larry James, "The Ancestry & Descendants of Major Samuel Lane."

She saved the life of Prince Charles Stuart, later Kings Charles II , by
helping him get to France. As her reward, the Lane family was granted
the heraldic augmentation of bearing on a canton the Arms of England
(three lions).

16. Richard Lane. ®1 Born abt 1597 in England. Richard died in
Eleuthera, Providence Isl, West Indies on 23 Dec 1656/1657, he was 59.

All ancestors of Richard Lane are from the research of Brenda Esslinger
of
Knoxville. She has a different Richard Lane than does Larry James in his
books.

Richard Lane was a merchant tailor and adventurer. He went to
Providence Island in the ship "Expectation" 16 Apr 1635. He took the
oath
of Allegeance and Supremacie: As likewise being confomable to the
Church of England; whereof they brought testimonie from the Ministers
and Justice of the Peace, of their abodes. He registered as destined
for"West Indies." He didn't settle in Jamestown, Virginia as some say.
He
and one son were drowned off Eleuthera Island before 7 Aug 1657.
From the Lane family history, Scott Co.

Following are notes of Brenda Esslinger of Knoxville.

John Camden Hotten - The Original List of Persons of Quality
Notes from - Kenyon Stevenson - English Reference 1st Vol. of the
Colonial
Series of the "Calendadod State Papers" 1574 to 1660 The Soldiers of VA.
Drowned off the Eleuthera Island, West Indies between 23 Dec. 1656 and 7
Aug 1657. There is no proof that this Richard is the Richard son of
Thomas and Alice Lane of King's Bromley in England. In "The Landed
Gentry," Richard, son of Thomas Lane, Esq, was a groom of the
bedchamber.
The following information from Sir Reginald de Lane through Thomas
Lane came from the following: 1. The Soldiers of Va. Pt.2. 2. Penelope
Johnson Papers, Chattanooga Library, Chattanooga, TN. 3. The Landed
Gentry by Burke 4. The Battle Abby Roll

Lineage.--The Ancient family of Lane came into England with William the

Falaise, France.
Sir Reginald de Lane was the grandfather of Adam who was living at

(1307-1327). Andrew living 1337. John, Richard married 9th year reign of
Edward II I (25 Jan 1335-24 Jan 1336) to Elizabeth de la Hyde. John
married 11th Year reign of Henry VI (1 Sept 1432-31 Aug 1433) to Margery
Egerton . Ralph married Joyce Cresset. He died 1477. Richard married
15th year reign Henry VII (22 Aug 1499-21 Aug 1500) to Anne Harcourt.
John born 1512 died 15 Nov. 1576 married Catherine Patrick of King's
Bromley . King's Bromley became the Lane family seat. Francis, Burke's
list him as Thomas. Died 31st year reign Elizabeth I (17 Nov. 1588-Nov
1589 ) married Catherine Grentham. John died reign of James I
(1603-1625) . Married Jane Littleton. Thomas died 1660 married Alice
Bagot. They had the following children: John, Richard, Jane, Walter,

There is no proof that Richard the son of Thomas was the Richard of

was the son of Richard. The only thing that I have found to connect the
line this way is the Lane family in Ireland. As stated above from
Burke's the Irish Lane's came from this family and Samuel Lane in his
will mentions Nephew/cousin in Ireland.

Richard married Alice ®1. Born abt 1605 in England. Alice died in All
Hollows, England on 4 Sep 1678, she was 73.

Providence Is, West Indies in 1657, he was 25.

Presumed drowned with father off the Eleuthera Island, West Indies

iv.Mary ®1. Born in 1642 in Providence Island, West Indies. Mary died
in London, England in 1674, she was 32.

If she was a child of Richard and Alice, she was probably born in the
West
Indies.

On 8 Jun 1667 when Mary was 25, she married William Denne ®1, in London,
England. Born in INT 1600 (Abt 1600/1650) in London, England. William

17. Samuel Lane Colonel. ®1 Born in 1628 in London, England. Samuel died
in Anne Arundel Co, Maryland in 1682, he was 54.

Went to Providence Island, West Indies with his family in 1635 at the
age of 8. He was evidently back in England in 1657. Came to Maryland in
1663. He was a double cousin of John Lane whose will was made on
9/8/1670 in London. It lists Samuel as a clerk, meaning clergyman . He
was a minister in Long Houghton, Northumberland. He was ejected from the
church in 1662. His first wife was evidently dead when he came to
Maryland in 1663. From Larry James, "The Ancestry & Descendants of Major
Samuel Lane."

In 1674 & 76, he was a Justice of Anne Arundel Co, MD, as Col Samuel
Lane. There were 10 Justices, and he was one of the five that made up a
quorum. (Warfield, "The Founders of Anne Arundel and Howard Counties,
Maryland)

Following notes from Brenda Esslinger of Knoxville, TN:

Samuel may have been married before coming to America to Barbara Roddam,
daughter of Edward. She probably died before 1662
There is no proof that this Samuel is the Samuel son of Richard who went
to
the West Indies. Immigrated in 1664.

In 1669 when Samuel was 41, he first married Margaret Mauldin ®1,
daughter of Francis Mauldin & Grace Dutton? (-aft 10 May 1698), in Anne
Arundel Co, Maryland. Born abt 1628.

Was married three times. #1 John Burrage #2 Samuel Lane #3 Job Evans

18. Dutton Lane Rev. ®1 Born abt 1670 in Anne Arundel Co, MD. Dutton
died in Baltimore Co, MD on 8 Oct 1726, he was 56.

He sold his portion of the inheritance and went to Baltimore Co, MD in
the late 1690's where he was a deputy surveyor in 1700. In 1699 he
received a grant of 300 acres in Baltimore Co called Lane's Triangle .
He
lost all of his holdings in Anne Arundel Co in 1703 in a lawsuit brought
by his mother's relatives. He fled to the Carolinas to escape creditors
but was back in Baltimore Co in 1708. (from Larry James book)

Bill Dutton found some connections with the Dutton family in Maryland.
Suggested that Dutton Lane's grandmother may have been a Dutton.

In 1695 when Dutton was 25, he married Pretitia Tydings ®1, daughter of
Richard Tydings (4 Dec 1654-abt 2 Feb 1687) & Charity Sparrow (abt
1650-Bef 2 Feb 1686/1687), in Baltimore Co, MD. Born abt 1674.

Marsha Weikle reported that on a newly updated information on the Morman
computer, Pretitia was given as the orphaned daughter of Richard
Tydings.

They had the following children:
i.Dutton ®1. Born in 1695 in Baltimore Co, MD. Dutton died in
Baltimore Co, MD in 1783, he was 88.

He lived in Baltimore Co, MD, all of his life in the vicinity of
Woodensburg.
(from Larry James book)

Baltimore Co, MD, Indexed Tax List: 1763 (Dutton Lane, Sr, Dutton Lane,
Jr,
Thomas Lane and William Lane in Soldier's Delight Hundred) ("St Thomas
Parish Registers 1732-1850," by Bill & Martha Reamy.)

Dutton married Dinah Boring ®1.

19ii.Samuel (~1700->1779)
iii.Richard ®1. Born abt 1702 in Baltimore Co, MD. Richard died in
1770, he was 68.

He moved to Pittsylvania Co, VA in 1746. Possibly moved to TN later .
(Larry
James book). Larry James speculated that the close association with
William
Bean may have meant that he was married to a daughter of William Bean.

In 1748, Richard Lane Sr, Thomas Davenport, James and Joseph Terry were
granted 20,000 acres on Turkey Cock Creek. (History of Pittsylvania Co,
p. 36)

In 1746 the names of many well known families appear in the surveyors
records: ...... some families from Maryland - Richard Lane, Sr, Richard
Lane, Jr, Tidence Lane and John Fuller Lane who patented lands along the
Elkhorn. (Hist of Pittsylvania Co, p. 44)

abt 1720 when Richard was 18, he married Sarah Fuller ®1.

iv.Margaret ®1. Born abt 1703 in Baltimore Co, MD.

Margaret married William Merryman ®1, in MD.

v.Sarah ®1. Born abt 1705 in Baltimore Co, MD.

They went to Pittsylvania Co, VA, before 1748.

In 1748 Dutton Lane, Robert Sweeting, Edward Sweeting and Dutton
Sweeting entered for several grants along Banister River. Sweden, or
Sweetings Fork, a stream in the eastern part of the county is probably
named for this family. In 1771, Robert Sweeting gave a power of attorney
to Dutton Lane to go to the province of Maryland to demand and receive
for him any lands and estates to which he was entitled. (History of
Pittsylvania Co, p. 44)

Edward and Dutton Sweeting are speculated as sons.

In 1733 when Sarah was 28, she married Robert Sweeting ®1, in Baltimore
Co, MD.

vi.Mary ®1. Born abt 1708 in Baltimore Co, MD.

Name from Michelle Taunton.

vii.Elizabeth ®1. Born abt 1710 in Baltimore Co, MD.

Name from Michelle Taunton.

viii.Charity ®1. Born abt 1713 in Baltimore Co, MD.

She is not listed in Larry James book.

ix.John ®1. Born abt 1716 in Baltimore Co, Maryland. John died in
Baltimore Co, MD abt 1769, he was 53.

He may have married Aarilla Bosley in 1754
