Hi!
Am curious as to the different words for cities in Lithuania. I assume this
reflects the multiple foreign influences (Polish, Russian, etc) and have seen
lists of some of the larger cities' that give these diverse spelling and/or
name variations.

However, I just recently discovered my grandpa's village of birth from his
naturalization papers. He gave the location name as Waiczlakisth, which I
looked up via Jewish gen. ShtetlSeeker. I sort of assume that the
"Waiczlakisth" spelling derives from Polish. The ShtetlSeeker gives the
Lithuanian variation as Birzu Laukas Didysis. I was wondering why there is
such a BIG difference, since usually the names look sort of similar. My 84 yr
old mom loosely interprets Birzu Laukas Didysis as "Region of Large Forests,"
and wonder if that's what Waiczlakisth means also.

Would like to hear from anyone who has met with similar inconsistencies.
Also, if anyone has any information concerning this area, I'd appreciate
