Greetings,
Please see if you can help me.

I'm looking for Ray W LONG born 1900 or 1905 and his father Nathan LONG.
Ray LONG's mother is Carrie Lillian NIFONG. Carrie's parents are William A
NIFONG and Joyce F WILLIAMS. Ray's father, Nathan LONG, was not married to
Carrie Lillian NIFONG and died shortly after Ray's birth.

Carrie Lillian NIFONG married Franklin E SNIDER, and can be seen with him
in the 1910 census. They are living with Pinkston H SNIDER, apparently
Franklin's father. Ray W LONG is not listed among the children -- BUT there
is listed the following:
Raleigh H SNIDER - ADCL - 10 years old

I expect Raleigh H SNIDER was adopted (ADCL) and may have changed his name
to Ray W(alter) LONG later.

My Grandfather, Ray W. LONG left Davidson Co.., NC when he was 13 years
old because of some legal trouble near Winston-Salem. Allegedly a group of
men blocked a bridge and a (deputy) sheriff was beaten or wounded. Because
Ray felt he would be charged, he took his true father's surname LONG and
went to Michigan. He (Ray) told me this, but did not mention that he also
changed his first name. Still, if I ran all the way from North Carolina to
Michigan to avoid police, changing my name would be a "logical" part of it.

These are my problems:
I can't find Ray LONG in NC or with his mother Carrie Lillian NIFONG.
I can't connect Ray LONG to his father Nathan LONG.
Do you know of a way to check adoptions as early as this? (c1904)
Do you know of a way to check out old sheriff's reports for the "Bridge"
story?

If you have any information, comments, or suggestions I will appreciate
