Dear jaki
I work in the family history centre of the Auckland, New Zealand Central
Library. Had a look in Griffiths valuations under O'Gorman and O'Gormley.
Quite a few of the first, none of the second.
There were about 20 John O'Gormans mainly centred around County Clare and three
from County Limmerick. Now, I see, I have left the piece of paper at work with
greater detail.
Griffiths valuation was taken between 1857 (if I remember correctly) and 1862
listing head of household, owner of the land, size and value of the land and its
buildings. John should be there as a head of household. There were no Owen
O'gorman, but that is not surprising, as he would have been too young to show up
on this valuation. Unfortunately, we don't know which John. Most of the
O'gormans in Clare were centered around one parish - will have to contact you
again. I didn't look under Grimley - we were flat out today, so only got a bit
done.
IReland is particularly difficult to research in because of the 1920 fire, but
not impossible.
It is going to be necessary to try to track down which county, parish and
townland - there were lots of British landlords.
Have you exhausted all sources in the US - marriage and death registrations for
Owen in the US - or obituaries. Intention to be come an American citizen -
depending upon how early, may have given the county name.
Good luck.
Heidi
