I have on loan a book called "Irish Passenger Lists, 1847-1871" by Brian
Mitchell and will do look-ups. The name is misleading. The passengers left
from the port of Derry and were almost exclusively from Northern Ireland.
The majority were from Cos. Donegal, Derry and Tyrone. The other
passengers were from Cos. Fermanagh, Antrim, Monaghan, Leitrim and
Roscommon. A few strays may also be on the lists, but don't look for any
from Munster (Cork, Waterford, Tipperary, Limerick, Clare and Kerry). The
strays may be from Down, Armagh and Cavan.
These are departure lists kept by the shipping lines of J&J Cooke
(1847-1867) and William McCorkell & Co. (1863-1871) and are only departures
from the port of Derry. Info given varies, but it usually gives the
departees' home town. If requesting a look-up, you will most likely get-
Name of the ship
Year of departure (month and day are not given)
Destination - most commonly Philadelphia, Quebec (port is NOT specified),
St. John and a few to New Orleans. None of these ships went to New York
City or Boston
Name of passenger
Age - this is inconsistantly given throughout the book
Home town is usually listed
Occupation is NOT listed.
Please remember - these are NORTHERN IRELAND names (with a very few
exceptions) departing from the port of DERRY during 1847-1871 on the J&J
Cooke and William Mc Corkle & Co lines.
To request a look-up, please put "Pass. list look-up" or something like
that in the subject line, as I do other look-ups. Just hitting the reply
button will work too. For best efficiency, I need Name and approximate age.
I don't need to know their occupation, father's name (unless a child),
where they went when they landed, etc.
By the way, I got this book from our local public library in the genealogy
section. They have lots of local references from around the world. As they
say on PBS "Check it out!"
Good hunting,
