MID-ARMAGH Community Network’s very first publication, entitled ‘Dacent Fowk’
was officially launched last Thursday by Lord Laird of Artigarvan. The
launch took place in the Millar Memorial Hall, Markethill, and attracted
people from as far away as Belfast, Warrenpoint and Dublin.Guest speakers at
the launch included Lord Laird of Artigarvan, Chairman of the Ulster-Scots
Agency, who called for parity of esteem at all levels for the Ulster-Scots
community. He suggested that this could most visibly be done by a significant
increase in funding, something which, to date, has been severly lacking and
which now needed to be urgently addressed. He went on to congratulate the
committee of Mid-Armagh Community Network for the excellent work they were
carrying out and wished them every success with their book and for the
future. Also speaking at the launch was the Rev Daniel Rankin, a native of
Glasgow and minister of First Markethill Presbyterian Church, who has written
the foreword for ‘Dacent Fowk’.
This exciting book has created interest, not only locally, but right across
Northern Ireland, Scotland and, following press coverage of the launch
details, orders were coming in from as far away as South Carolina in the USA.
The cover page shows a backdrop of the local townland map, superimposed with
colour photographs of the Presbyterian churches featured in the book.
The book extends to 140 pages and covers a brief history of the early
Ulster-Scots people in Ireland, early Presbyterianism, the history and
development of the village of Markethill, the history of First Markethill
Presbyterian Church (founded 1609), and the surrounding Presbyterian Churches
of Second Markethill, Cladymore, Redrock, Tullyallen and Mountnorris. Also
included, is a history timeline covering local, regional and national
happenings, and events which provide a flavour of what life was like in
Markethill village down through the centuries. The contents include stories,
photographs, drawings and poetry, some of which are published for the very
first time.
‘Dacent Fowk’ was researched and written by Mrs Myrtle McGuinness, who is
currently Development Officer for Mid-Armagh Community Network, and Mrs
Pamela Qua, who was employed on a one-year contract as a research assistant
for the project. The project was funded by the Rural Development Council
through the EU Peace Programme.
The book is now on sale at £4.99 and can be obtained from the following
outlets in Markethill, or by contacting Myrtle McGuinness on 028 3755 1409 or
028 3755 1741 or e-mail . Postage and
