Somehow, this e-mail was stored in the murky depths of (what I like to
call) my mind...when!
...last night, as I was reading "Country Cracks - Old Tales from the
County of Armagh, collected by T.G.F. Paterson...the story entitled,
"McGrahan broke it up", I espied the following footnote:
"A partly-destroyed cashel in Cargans townland near Silverbridge."
So, I've just enquired about Cargans townland at the IreAtlas Townland
Database at:
http://www.seanruad.com/
...and found out that Cargans townland is part of Ballymore parish, in
the barony of Orior Lower.
If you go to the PRONI's map of the parishes that make up the County
Armagh at:
http://proni.nics.gov.uk/geogindx/arma.htm
...you'll see that Ballymore [#2] is on the eastern border of the
County, about midway along the north-south axis...looks like this parish
surrounds the town of Tandragee.
And here's a reference directly from the NIR-ARMAGH mailing list
archives at:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/NIR-ARMAGH/2001-01/0978938917
...where another reader asked the same question, that is, where is
Silverbridge, including a citation from the 1888 Book of County Armagh
by Bassett.
Happy hunting!
