Hello,

I am new to this list, having recently discovered there were some RUSSELLs
in my direct ancestry, and their trail leads back to Hunterdon Co. The
earliest proven one was a Mary RUSSELL who m. James COWAN, Sr., prob. in
Berkeley Co. (now Jefferson Co.), VA. (We don't know the date, but their
first child was b. abt 1778.) We know that the Cowans lived for a time in
Hunterdon Co., NJ as we have a deed to 105 acres on Spruce Run, dated 1753.
This property was owned by James' father, John Cowan.

Some researchers believe that the Russells also lived in Hunterdon Co.
before migrating to VA, and that Mary had a brother named William. We are
trying to locate her (their) parents. There is a 1762 record of a Charles
Russell of Hardwick, Sussex Co., who d. intestate. His estate was renounced
by Sarah Russell in favor of George SILVERTHORN.

One of the COWAN researchers has speculated that the naming pattern used by
James and Mary COWAN for their children indicates that Charles may have
been the father of Mary (and possibly William) Russell.

Is anyone researching the RUSSELLs of Hunterdon Co. in this time frame?
Proof or disproof will be welcomed. There are more threads of
information--we need some help in weaving them together. Will gladly share
what information we have.

Thank you for reading.

Judy
