Greetings: I have just this week received undocumented records of my Philip
and Jonathan Smith family.I would appreciate any further information,
corrections, or comments on the following information:
The first known ancestor of the Smith line was John Smith b unknown d between
1 May 1747 and 4 May 1748 married Hannah. Issue:
(1). John Smith b & d dates unknown but died in Maidenhead Township and
married
Rachel. John's siblings include Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, Susanna,
Hannah, Sarah, and Priscilla.
Issue of John and Rachel Smith include:
(A) Jonthan Smith b 30 Jan 1759, Maidenhead Township, Hunterdon Co.,
NJ.In
January 1773 he went from the home of his mother and stepfather
in Maid
enhead Township to Princeton to learn the tailoring trade. He
served terms
as a fifer in the Revolutionary War. He moved several times,
first to Frede-
rick Co. VA, Mason Co., KY, Cincinnati, OH, Logan Co., KY and
finally
to Elkton, Todd Co., KY. Jonathan first married Mary Furman, d/o
Josiah
and Mary Furman of Hunterdon Co., NJ and second, Lydia
Kerchaval.
(B). Philip Smith b 6 March 1760 d ca 1840 married Hunterdon Co. NJ
October 1786 Teressa Herrin(g). Philip is thought to have been
the
brother of Jonathan as they both seemed to have traveled
together and
both settled in adjoining counties in southwest Kentucky.
Phillip first
traveled to Culpeper Co., VA where the Herrins had settled at
Brandy
Station. Philip then moved to Frederick Co., VA, then to Logan
Co.,KY a
finally settled in Trigg Co., KY.
Siblings of Jonathan and Philip include Enoch, Sarah and Isaiah (or Issac). I
am also interested in the role played by the Herrin family in early Hunterdon
Co. development.
I will be happy to exchange information with researchers of this line and will
most certainly appreciate corrections and additions. Eldred Melton.
