There are a number of researchers who have documented the family of
William Allen (b. 1711, Ireland) of Amwell, Hunterdon Co. William's
three marriages and children from each are found in one of the New
Jersey genealogies. His son David was married to Ivea Fox, daughter of
Gabriel Fox, also of Hunterdon Co. About 1782 David and family and
Gabriel Fox emigrated to Hampshire Co., VA/WV where David remained for
about the next 20 years before emigrating to Bourbon Co, KY.
In 1780, 1784 and 1786 a Robert Allen paid taxes in Amwell, Hunterdon
Co. Rather curiously my ancestor Robert Allen first appears in Hampshire
Co. records on April 21, 1787, paying taxes that day with nine others.
Two of the men who also paid taxes on that date were David Allen and
Gabriel Fox. Could the Robert of Amwell be the same as my ancestor of
Hampshire? What if any relationship could there be?
The Robert Allen of Hampshire Co was married to Isabelle ______. Most of
his children married former Hunterdon residents. His sons were: William,
Samuel, Thomas and perhaps Robert and Arthur. His daughters were
Margaret (wife of Samuel Calvin, born Hunterdon Co, NJ), Elizabeth (wife
of Thomas Burket, son of John Burket of Kingwood, Hunterdon Co, NJ and
Sarah Ruckman of Bucks Co., PA), Ann (wife of Christopher Vandergrift of
Delaware), Mary (wife of Israel Cunningham), Jane (wife of Stephen
Ganoe, Jr. of Hunterdon Co, NJ) and Iva .
Two other interesting facts which may or may not mean anything are the
1850 and 1860 census records for Elizabeth Allen Burket show her
birthplace as New Jersey and secondly, John Burket, father of Thomas,
owned property adjoing that of William Allen. The father and grandfather
of William Allen of Amwell were both named Robert, but I can find no
connection other than the suggested intermarriage with Hunterdon
families and similar coincidences. Any sources for documenting Robert
Allen of Amwell would be appreciated.
Also have considerable information on the Burket and Ruckman families to
exchange.
