Can someone give me a brief summary of the history of the counties in
the Hunterdon area, that is, what were the original names and which
county broke off of which? The main questions that I have are:
1) I notice that the town of Hopewell is in Hunterdon Co. However, was
there at one time an entire county named Hopewell?
2) Was Mercer Co. once part of Hunterdon Co.?
3) What county was the city of Trenton originally in?
Some old texts that I have been reading about people in this area would
make more sense if I know the actual extent of the counties at that time
(late 1600's to late 1700's).
